Need a suggestion on a shotgun

Post by garcia946 »

I`m looking onto getting my first shotgun. New to this side of firearms , usually deal with pistols.
The only shotgun that I`ve looked at is a Mossberg 500 series in a 12 guage, is this ok?
I want a muti-purpose shotgun , home defense , clay shooting & hunting.
Any help or suggestions.... :bigear: :???:

You might look at the Benelli nova or supernova. They have some great features, are comfortable to shoot all day long, can take whatever weather you throw at em, and can be found used, in great shape for a very reasonable cost.

They are also customizeable for various uses.

and check out the Mossy 930 semi-auto

20 inch barrel for "around the house" with 5 round tube, and 28 inch conversion barrel for birding (insert plug in mag tube for upland birding)

That's one on my must have list for 2010, and my "home away from home boy toy store" has one taken in on trade that's never been shot....$500....aaarrrggghhhhhh... I hope he will hide it back for a couple of months

I think you have that backwards. Plug it for migratory birding, no mag limitation for upland birds.

I have a Benelli Nova that I bought for duty work. I found it to be better than most of the Mossberg's we had for duty and at least as good as the Remington's (my opinion better but most of the officers who tried it said just as good).

If I were a hunter, I would be absolutely satisfied with it for that use, if I had a spare barrel. Mine is the tactical version with a short barrel, extended magazine tube, and ghost ring sights. I might go with the super nova if I were doing a lot of shooting. The difference is the super has the mecury tube in the stock for recoil reduction.

For home defense, you'll probably put a few "defense" rounds through it and stick it in the corner
ready for any emergency that might arise on the homefront. Any shotgun that proves reliable will fill
this requirement (short barrel probably preferred). Nova's are fine, Remingtons, Mossy's etc.

If you're going to do ALOT of shooting, as in goose hunting, ducks, dove, clays, skeet etc. I would suggest you
look at Beretta Xtrema II's. Reduced recoil system and a nice gun to boot.

Bennelli Black Eagles' are nice. You might look there too. I've shot both and my next shotgun will be the Xtrema II.

Not sure what your price range is, but the old adage "you get what you pay for" applies.

Good luck.

I use a Mossy 500 with 18.5" barrel for home defense. I bought it a while back and it came with an extra ribbed 28" barrel for hunting and I love it. :woohoo

And if it eases your mind, remember that the 500 is the base-model for the Marines' Mossberg 590 used in Iraq and elsewhere - it's plenty strong enough.
:iagree:

With a nod to the Remington 870 only because that's my preference in a pump.

If you find you want the convenience of separate shotguns, don't overlook the Maverick 88 made by Mossberg. It's U.S.-assembled from a combination of U.S. and Mexican parts. Other than the trigger group, parts and accessories are interchangeable with the 500 series. And, the 18.5" 5-shot version is only $179 at Academy. Perfect for that gun you plan on leaving loaded forever, just in case.

There are a lot of great choices out there. It depends on what you want to spend. Mossberg is going to be very hard to beat for a quality, value priced gun as they offer a lot for the money. I have a Mossberg mossberg 590a1 that I keep permanently in my truck and I keep a Saiga 12 for HD right by the bed. The benelli m4 is on my short list. It is extremely nice, but it is really expensive and I am having a hard time justifying the cost. I don't think you can beat a good 12 gauge for HD. Good luck with your search.

Cost is not a big thing for me as long as I get a good unit to that will serve the purpose that I am looking for.
In this case an all around good shotgun for everthing that I listed.

In that case, there's no good answer. If you're not on a budget, the shotgun world is quite diverse.

Of course, if money is not an issue, I'd get multiple purpose-driven shotguns instead of one single shotgun. It's possible to do it all with one gun, but if you get into hunting or clay shooting, you're likely going to end up getting something specifically for that purpose down the road - that's what I did.

You could go for a Saiga 12, which will do whatever you need, and if you're hunting migratory birds, only need to change out to a 2-round mag instead of fiddling with plugs and whatnot. It's semi-auto, built on the AK platform, and reliable from everything I've heard. I've shot one that belongs to another member here, and it is quite fun. They're also quite customizable. There's even a bullpup stock kit that's supposed to hit the market soon.

There's at least one forum (probably several) dedicated to the saiga shotties:

Just a suggestion.
