Renew Instructor's Certificate online 3-1-2010?

Post by CWOOD »

I have read with interest some questions here about renewing a CHL Instructor's Certificate. I am in need of renewal also. I was not able to make it to a renewal class in 2009 so my certificate expires tomorrow.

I emailed DPS and inquired about 2010 classes and was told that they were not yet scheduled and to check back after the first of 2010.

Then I remembered the changes brought about by the last legislature in the sunset law which went into effect 9-1-09. The effect is that by March 1, 2010, DPS is instructed to have in place an online renewal system, which will provide instructors an opportunity to renew every second time online, with shooting opportunities provided in every county.

Could this be a reason why a regular schedule is not in place?

Has anyone redeived any information on this?

When I did renewal school fairly early - mid September - we were told that there were quite a few changes upcoming, to just watch their web site. ;-) Another guy at our place is looking to do the original instructor school. He's had all of his paperwork in to them for months now and has heard nothing (but is still watching their web site ;-) ) Even if you do have to start completely over, I think 2010 may be the first year that a major portion of that class can be done online. It sounds good if the Legislature did indeed put a March 1 deadline on them, as that date was mentioned a couple of times in our renewal class where I took the silent posture of "I will believe it when I see it".

We were also told some things that have subsequently been dismissed as "rumor", so I'm back to the "I will believe it when I see it" - on their web site ;-) posture.

The following is an email exchange---to be read from the bottom up--- I recently had with the CHLInstructor section of DPS. As you will note, I asked them about the the subject of online renewals of Instructor Certificates and the deadline of March 1, 2010.

From their response, it is obvious that the online renwal process is not uppermost in their mind at this point and that even the 3-1-10 date in their own literature has not been fully recognised yet. If you look online to the Instructor's Section at the DPS website at "CHL Legal Issues lesson plan" on the' Instructor Guidlines/Presentations portion of the "Instructor Information" , you will see their own words acknowledge the 3-1-10 deadline to provide renewals in every county in the State.

This will be for every other renewal, so we will still have to go through the entire process once every four years.

Interesting

cwood, you’re right regarding that information and I’ll point that to our supervisor. Probably they will re-worded. So far I know that it’s a lot of talking that improving the process and at some point the department wants to have everything accessible online but we’re not there yet.

The March 1, 2010 date came from the "CHL Legal Issues lesson plan" on the' Instructor Guidlines/Presentations portion of the "Instructor Information" section of the CHL website.

So far the department doesn’t have anything set up regarding the online renewals of instructors and I’m not aware that the legislators decided on a date regarding this new process. In case that this process it’ll take place in the future, probably the information would be posted online under the instructor updates, but again so far the department doesn’t have such a process online renewals for the instructors.

My understanding of the legislation effective 9-1-09 is that there will be a process for online renewals of instructor certificates, for every other renewal beginnig March 1, 2010.

Is my understanding correct and, if so, when might we see related information posted on the DPS/CHL website?

Thanks for all you do.
