Gun off Campus gets student kicked out of school

GLENN COUNTY, Calif. -- (01/10/10) -- The National Rifle Association is firing back at Willows School administrators for expelling a student who had a shotgun in his truck. He was kicked out even though the truck was never brought on campus.

"I think the school over-reacted," said student Gary Tudesko.

Tudesko is upset over the school board's decision to expel him after they found a shotgun inside his truck. "I should've taken them home."

The 16 year old had just returned from a duck hunting trip and parked his truck with the unloaded shot gun, ammo and a knife off campus. "I thought if I parked off campus that I'd be all right."

California law defines a school zone as a distance within 1,000 feet from school grounds. The National Rifle Association got word of his expulsion and is fighting to get him back in school.

The NRA provided him a lawyer to help with his appeal to the Glenn County Board of Education.

"I hope the NRA wins and tears that school district up because that's uncalled for," said Wes Lewis, the owner of the "Guns and Stuff" shop in North Highlands. he believes Tudesko didn't mean any harm.

"They blew it way out of proportion as far as I'm concerned," Lewis said.

Bonnie Miller teaches at McClellan's Keema High School and says the teen needs to pay the consequences. "I think rules are in place for a reason, and unfortunately, there are a million excuses why something happens."

These so-called educators are the same people who elected Feinstein, Boxer, Pelosi, Waxman and Obama, et al. Why would their actions in this situation come as a big surprise?

BTW, I hope the NRA tears 'em a new one, too.

I guess things have changed a little since I was in school. I know I will date myself, but I used to carry a shotgun or two in my car on school property so I could get in a little pheasant hunting after school. In Iowa, the daily season for pheasant is 8:00am to 4:30pm. That only left me one hour on a school day to hunt. And I didn't want to spend that time going home to pick up my gun and shells.

I also wonder how they figured out it was his truck. If it wasn't parked on school property... I'm just sayin'.

1,000 feet, thats er quite a few residences in a suburban/urban setting. Its er kind of strange. Have to be some outs to it.

What if his house was in the 1000 ft perimeter around school and he parked in his driveway does the schools "right to feel safe" extend into his living room?

I use to do the same thing except I was dove hunting after school. My principal asked me to bring it inside and lock it up in his office whenever I brought it with me. So on the mornings I was going dove hunting after school, I would park my truck and carry my trusty 870 wingmaster across the parking lot and into the school, down the hall, and into his office. It wasn't even in a case because when it was in my truck, it was in one of those gun racks in the back glass. I don't suppose you could get away with that these days.....

I have said this before but when I was in sschool, a lot of us carried long guns in the car to go hunting/plinking in the afternoon and almost everyone had a Buck knife on their belt. I remember, let's see, exactly zero shootings and/or stabbings in or around the schools. Since then, if you had any idea how many I have answered in "Gun Free" school zones...well let's just say it would curl your hair.

California has gone off the deep-end. Unfortunately I have noticed a trend in school teachers that seems to mirror this same mentality. I am not sure why those that you "assume" are more educated think that they should despise the concept of the individual right to self-defense and believe that only society can do it for you.

I apologize in advance to any teachers that do not fit this category.

The Supreme Court ruled the first "Act" was unconstitutional" so the Feds went back and changed a few sentences to make it pass by, but mostly they are using the "interstate commerce" argument.

Basically if you allow guns near schools, it will somehow effect interstate commerce in a bad way

Interstate commerce is used in all sorts of cases, its one of the reasons Drugs are sometimes a Federal Crime and not just a State crime. I should get my wife (the future Liar,er um... Lawyer ) on here. She could go on for days about it

Thinking back to my high school days . . . we didn't have a student parking lot, so we parked on the street.

If some school bureaucrat demanded I open my vehicle not parked on school grounds, for his inspection, I would have politely told him to pound sand.
