Text Version of CHL Handbook
Does anyone know where I could get a text version of the 2009-2010 CHL handbook? The one at http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/ftp/forms/LS-16.pdf appears to be a scan of the document and thus not search-able in Adobe Acrobat Reader. I have some OCR software that I could probably use, but it's often cranky. I wonder if we could get the text version from the TXDPS.

There is an old version from 2001 out there, but I haven't been able to find anything except the scanned version for the new one.

Not quite what you are looking for, but you can get the individual statutes in plain text here:ScottDLS wrote:Does anyone know where I could get a text version of the 2009-2010 CHL handbook? You can copy and paste into a word doc and create your own text manual.

Re: Text Version of CHL Handbook
Good link. I have seen Texas statute site and I have used it to get the latest legal language, but it's not as conveniently collected together as the handbook. Someone PM'ed me a search-able ls-16.pdf version that had presumably been tagged by using the full Adobe Acrobat OCR capabilities.JJVP wrote:Not quite what you are looking for, but you can get the individual statutes in plain text here:ScottDLS wrote:Does anyone know where I could get a text version of the 2009-2010 CHL handbook? Often when I'm posting here or making a comment on a post, I like to go right to the statute and read what it says, to see if I can offer any input/opinion/analysis.

This is a good source however be aware that it is not up to date with the changes made in 2009. It does seem to have info through the changes of 2007.JJVP wrote:[

Re: Text Version of CHL Handbook
When I get time, I'm going to try to OCR the PDF graphic version the state has posted. Because of the formatting, I suspect the project will involve a lot of cleanup. If anyone has high-end OCR software, you might want to take on the project and save me the trouble.

I intended to do it for the 2009 handbook, but there didn't seem top be much interest in it when I did the 2007 book. Maybe someone would like to update the work that I done.

Searchable PDF
I have run the CHL 2009-2010 handbook through Adobe Pro's OCR and it is now searchable. I'm not posting this to the general public but the link is:

One warning, this thing is 32MB in size, so don't try downloading it if you are on a slow connection. It also won't be e-mailable.

Re: Searchable PDF
Yes, unfortunately as part of the OCR process it includes the fonts into the file and this thing uses five or six different fonts. I was able to do some optimization and reduce it to 27meg (wow). I also exported it to a text file. Just a little smaller, 173KKeith B wrote:Thanks jmorris.jmorris wrote:I have run the CHL 2009-2010 handbook through Adobe Pro's OCR and it is now searchable. I also ran the DPS scan through Adobe pro and my searchable file is 1.55 MB. 71 pages.
Re: Text Version of CHL Handbook
I use Sumatra for all .pdf documents. It is free and has so many more features (including search) at a fraction of the bloatware Adobe has developed itself into. And none of the security/update issues. Far superior to Adobe.
