A buddy and I were discussing this scenario the other day - the most precious things will probably be AMMO followed by guns to shoot them with!

What would you eat? Especially if you are among the 90% of the U.S. population that lives in a city or town with little acreage?

You can trap rats, possums, and feral cats and dogs; but that supply would run out quickly.

Lots of people agree on Guns and Ammo being more precious than food.

I guess the thought is, if you have guns and ammo, and someone else has food, but no guns and ammo. You will shortly have food, and they will not!

I believe the technical term for that is robbery, and it is a crime against the laws of God and man.

I condemn this type of thinking. I did not see an smiley face or any other attempt at humor there.

A little belated here, but

But I was being serious about people thinking that way.
I'm not saying what *I* would do, and I didn't say that it was MY opinion, but you would be foolish to believe that others would not do it to you, were you in that situation (unarmed, with food).
Put another way, any supplies you DO have, if you are not able to protect them, will not be your supplies very long.

I have seen that kind of thing in survivalist forums, which is why I avoid them.

An amoral person could steal food for a while, but soon there would be nothing left to steal. What do they plan to do then? Reinstitute the feudal system or slavery?

I agree entirely, but referring back to my earlier statement, you need something worth defending.

I disagree. Firing off guns to get food is going to attract a lot of unwanted attention from those who are hungrier then you. Bows, arrows, knives, fishing poles, will all be more important then guns after an incident. Things that kill quietly will be highly valued.

What do you do when the hungry come to your door ?
At what point do the laws of god allow you to watch out for yourself ?
How would you deal with a mob ?

My mother actually endured this for real in WW2. She was raised in Algeria (French North African "Pieds Noir"), and lived for a time during which the retreating Germans were shelling her city from one side, while the advancing Allies were shelling it from the other side... ...and then there was the odd aerial bomb or three. Her family ate rats and cats to survive.

I agree with the general sentiments given on this thread regarding coins. There's the old adage, "You can't eat gold."

When the balloon goes up, you have immediate needs that can only be met by having ready access to food, water, short term barterables and having the tools to defend them against rioting mobs (that means guns and ammo and hopefully neighbors that are ready to pack up with you.)

Nevertheless, in a POST-TEOTWAWKI situation, when order is starting to recover, this is where I am convinced gold and silver will be among the first forms of money to emerge. For an economy to function, you need a base-line monetary unit. The dollar won't be it. The Fed is working hard to destroy the dollar, and it is destined to collapse at some point.

Anyway, if a new foldable currency comes around, you will be able to sell some of your coins into that currency and continue along. Anybody left holding paper dollars will be out of luck.

Jim, you mentioned that you lose 8.25% of the value of the coins when you buy them, because of sales tax. The way around that is to buy your coins from out of state and have them shipped to you. You don't pay sales tax on out of state purchases.

Right now there's a dip in the price of silver. It plunged 7% last week and it's down almost 4% today. These kinds of dips are the time to buy.

Definitely very good points...although I'm certain there will be power struggles and weapons/ammo will be highly prized and also quite useful in trades...but that's just my opinion. Time to take up fishing...and bow-hunting, I suppose!
