What is the purpose of the paper backing behind something that has been framed professionally?

not 100% sure of this, but I believe it is to keep out dust, dirt etc that over time could degrade some of the adhesives used in the mounting process? Also gives it a nice professional "finished" look.

More to keep out dust and other stuff that could degrade the original artwork - as well as give it the professional finished look.

To keep contaminants from seeping into the back of the artwork, but more likely to provide visual contrast between the frame and art. You don't see it in oils or acrylics near as much as you see it in lithos or prints, IMO.

Is it a REAL Painting or a Photo or just a Reproduction?
If its real, every little bit helps, just a cheap (50-100) Lithograph? Dont worry about it

I normally buy frames at Hobby Lobby and frame my prints that way. Most of my frames are 16x20 matted down to 11x14. I usually catch the prints on sale so I'm not paying an arm/leg for much of it. Aside from about $10,000 in camera gear it's a cheap way to decorate. (Carrying $4000 worth of camera gear around my neck is a huge reason why I wanted my CHL)

My wife just asked me if I ever put paper on the backs of any of my photos. Answer is no.

If you are looking for Frames, Ikea is the way to go. They have CHeap Frames (If you are a hobbyist you might want to paint/lacquer them yourself) but other than being alittle hard to frame (I just rip their cheapo frame off and put my own on)
Beware iKea has a Gun busters sign on the door but not a legal 30.06
I've heard of them calling the cops on people open carrying where its legal in other states
