About all that I can add to what's been covered is 30 (or 32) round mags for semi-auto machine pistols (TEC-9, MAC 11, HK MP5?, Uzi, etc.) and then of course, the full auto machine pistols/SMG (ie - MAC 10, 11, 12, HK MP5, Uzi, etc.). I know, I know, most folks wouldn't consider the semi-auto versions "handguns" but I believe that's what they are legally considered, but don't ask me...because....wait for it....wait for it....I most certainly am NOT a lawyer!

Actually, this is a Good question... I thought I knew the answer...

However, According to the Code on our CHL's... a SA allows semi automatics, or NSA allows revolvers....
Thats the only place I can think that it's automatic status is defined....

Let me look at the statutes real quick for the exact verbage...

EDIT: Found this:

GC §411.171. DEFINITIONS. In this subchapter:
(1) "Action" means single action, revolver, or semi-automatic action.


GC §411.179. FORM OF LICENSE. (a) The department by rule
shall adopt the form of the license. A license must include:
(1) a number assigned to the license holder by the department;
(2) a statement of the period for which the license is effective;
(3) a statement of the category or categories of handguns the license
holder may carry as provided by Subsection (b);
(4) a color photograph of the license holder;
(5) the license holder's full name, date of birth, hair and eye color,
height, weight, and signature;
(6) the license holder's residence address or, as provided by Subsection
(d), the street address of the courthouse in which the license
holder or license holder's spouse serves as a federal judge or the license
holder serves as a state judge; and
(7) the number of a driver's license or an identification certificate
issued to the license holder by the department.
(b) A category of handguns contains handguns that are not prohibited
by law and are of certain actions. The categories of handguns are:
(1) SA: any handguns, whether semi-automatic or not; and
(2) NSA: handguns that are not semi-automatic.

That sort of clears it up. Kind of.. Looks like Fully automatic handguns are legal to carry on a 'SA' license!
One could even argue that a 'NSA' Class (aka Revolver) Licensee can Also carry a Fully Automatic, as it's Not semi-automatic as specified in the statute!

The Only caveat I can see, is 'Action' is defined earlier and does not include fully automatic. It then says "A category of handguns contains handguns that are not prohibited by law and are of certain actions".

Good points dicion - then to further muddy the water...my MAC 11 (full auto) also has a collapsing shoulder stock...so, in other words, it wouldn't/shouldn't fall under the "handgun" category (my guess anyway)...so, does it then get treated like a long gun (rifle/shotgun) with regards to carry? Meaning, concealed, open, etc. doesn't matter...not that I'm advocating slinging my SMG around my neck and "taking a stroll" with it.

From what I've read, since handguns are the more 'restrictive' category, and since it has a foldable stock, then yes, it would get treated like a handgun, since it does not plant at the shoulder at that point, and can be operated with one hand (I'm sure we'd both agree that one-handed operation is NOT recommended, however!)

If Long guns were more restricted than handguns, I'm sure they'd try to use that on it instead. It all comes down to the DA trying to pin anything they can on you in a situation like this.

So, in lieu of knowing for sure, I'd treat it like the most restricted of the categories, and in Texas, that's a handgun.

My bad. Apparently, Glock, does not offer a 30-round mag in .40. I thought I had seen an advertisement one once.

However, a company named Scherer makes 29 round mags for Glock .40's and 10mm and 25 rounders for the .45. I don't know how good they are and they out of stock, but they do exist.

Well, the Grendel P-30's standard mag is a 30 rounder, and it's a concealable size. Same for the new PMR-30. Probably kinda tough to find a holster for, though.

AFAIK it's Kalifornia and Massachusetts which frown on "high capacity" mags, that
being defined as anything greater than 10. It's a shame that gun makers have to
kowtow to these states and make specific models which are < or = 10 rounds.

Which is kind of crazy when you think about it. If some BG wanted to rock and roll
with his gun in a bad way, all it takes is multiple 10 round mags loaded up and ready
to go. To switch out mags takes no time to speak of.
