78 year old actor Rip Torn, in a rather bizarre incident, broke into
a bank, while drunk, thinking it was his home.

The bank alarm summoned the LEO's, who found him wandering around
inside the bank, and he asked why they were taking him out of his house.

He had a loaded .22 handgun on him. He did not challenge the cops with it.
Among other charges, he is in trouble for the gun since his Connecticut
CHL/equivalent expired in October 2007.

He's old enough to know better, but still doesn't know better.

If I can help it it, I'd rather not have Alzheimers or some other form of dementia. How about you?

Yes, I would not prefer to have "Oldtimers' disease.

Rip Torn's situation is that he's an alcoholic. He has been in
repeated trouble with the NYS and CT federales for drinking
and then doing stupid things.

Speaking of "Alzheimers":

Two 80 year old ladies are going out to lunch. Mabel gets behind the wheel
of her car and within a block of home she ran a red light, but didn't hit anyone.
Her friend noticed and was alarmed, but didn't say anything.
Mabel then runs another red light, and missed everyone that time too.

So her friend pipes up "Mabel, I don't like to complain, but you've just run
2 red lights since we left the house!"

Mabel - "Oh am I driving today?" :-)

Talking about 3 stooges and taxi cab.
Once upon a time, 3 stooges flagged a taxi cab, the taxi driver immediately recognized them and decided to pull a fast one.
The 3 stooges jumped in and proceeded to tell the cab driver their destination. The taxi reved-up the engine for a sec and shut it off.
He goes: "Hey pals, we have reached our destination".
The first stooge, hand over some cash to the driver and opened the door.
The Second stooge, Said: "Thank you for the ride"
Their third stooge, went " Bam! and slapped the driver a quick flyer. The driver goes: "Darn it, I am busted!" The stooge adds, "Next time do not speed!"

We moored in Naples, my first time there, and the gun gang got ready to go ashore together and see the sights. Since I had a couple of things to finish before I could go on Liberty, we arranged for me to meet everyone in about an hour at the "Bluebird", a club popular with the sailors in that port.

Of course nobody bothered to tell me where the Bluebird was.

When I finished my task, I got all squared away in my dress blues and hit the beach. Nobody on the quarterdeck knew where the Bluebird was either, so I decided to take a cab, and asked the first cab driver in the queue near the brow, "How much to the Bluebird?"

This worthy looks at me like I have two heads and says "500 Lira, Joe!" and not wanting to be any later, I figure this is a good deal and agree to it.

I jump in the cab and slam the door, the cabbie puts it in gear, stomps on the gas, stomps on the brake, and announces "BLUEBIRD!!"

I paid about $0.75 to ride about 50 yards. The Bluebird was right at the end of the pier.

Of course I didn't have any Lira on me, so he got a dollar, which was a pretty good tip for the ride, and was back in the cab line before I got in the door of the bar.

He needs recovery, but he's not going to get it until he hits his personal bottom. The sad truth is the possibility that this incident may not be that personal bottom. Hopefully it is, and he'll gain sobriety.

A doctor tells his patient "I got two matters of bad news for you"

First, you've got cancer.

The patient says "Oh, No!"

The doctor then replies "You also have Alzheimers.

The patient responds "Well, at least I don't have cancer!

Anybody else see the other problem here?

78 year old disoriented drunk breaks into a bank, presumably without the aid of specialized tools and/or knowledge? Alarm or not, they need to work on their front-line security.

I'm sure he was nowhere near getting to the money, but still, a bank should have the ability to seal up pretty well: what would they do if they had a little advance notice of a violent robbery during business hours, but not enough to evacuate? If they can't lock out the elderly and infirm, they sure can't keep armed robbers away from their people.

I don't know about your banks, but every bank I've seen has glass doors and windows that can be broken.

The bigger the area you're trying to secure, the more difficult it is to secure. Banks secure their money in a vault or safe, then construct an ordinary business facade around that secure space. There's no need to secure the lobby and offices, and even trying to do so would be prohibitively expensive.

At least one bank I've dealt with had tall, narrow windows that an adult would be hard pressed to squeeze through, even without glass bits clinging to the edges. Considering how many spend a small fortune on decorating, I'm surprised that so few use wooden doors, though. (Then again, I've also been sorely disappointed in the "security" footage from most banks lately too: what good does it do to know the size of the robber's bald spot?)

KD5NRH:

You are preaching to the choir here, with regards to bank surveillance cameras,
be they still or video.

A bank has known distances from the cameras to where the robbers will stand,
we live in a world with the highest tech of cameras, and you might swear that some
of these bank photos were taken by a pinhole camera made by a 6th grader for a
science project.

How about cameras outside Stop-and-robs that can't take a clear picture of a license
plate?

In Corinth, TX there was a unique dump truck (white cab with bright orange dump body)
that had a sign on its door. About 3 AM, the guys in the truck stole a Bobcat from a nearby construction
site and pulled the outside ATM off its moorings. The pictures from bank's cameras were so
poor they couldn't read the license plate, or the sign on the truck's door. Sheesh!

Their insurance company just says "Put up a camera system" It doesnt say it has to be a GOOD Camera or system.
I ALMOST wish they would pass "Laws" to make Cameras meet a certain requirement in places where Public money is stored (FTC what are you good for?)
