Resume problems, what should I do?
One of my Co-Workers husbands is a big wig at a local Software firm. I was talking about my friend, who is a tech guy, and told me to give him his resume and see if there is anything for him.
MY friend sent me his resume and its terrible. He's got his High School GPA, his Resume is too long, he has an award listed for a Modification (or Mod) he made for a 1st person shooter from 7 years ago!
Should I sent it in and let my friend look like a fool, tell my friend about it, or just edit it and not tell him?

Help him with his resume if he's a friend. Otherwise....

I'm afraid if I say anything, his Ego will get in the way.Oldgringo wrote:Help him with his resume if he's a friend. Otherwise....

Let his Ego find him a job.

I'm just gonna send in his resume and let the chips fall where they may. I might ask the Boss guy, if he doesnt hire/interview my friend, if he can write a letter saying part of the reason was his Resume sucked.

Tell him he needs to get ahold of a current resumé writing book.

I would try to help the friend first and if hes not open to your suggestions, well only you can decide what to do at that point. Just explain to your friend you are trying to give him the best opportunity to get the job.

There are MANY excellent resume writing programs out there that prompt you through the entire process. If it's hideous and he is your friend, you are obligated to tell him the truth as you see it, since he asked you for advice. NOT telling him the truth makes you a false friend.
Since you can only proof read he is the one to write it. And only he knows his history.

His Ego and 50¢ won't even buy him a Starbucks coffee. Sometimes, the best thing that can happen to a self destructive ego is to allow it to self destruct. Only then can the person learn a little humility and gain a little recovery.

As you ponder your decision, keep in mind that if you forward that sad resume as is, your job seeking friend isn't the only one who will end up looking like a fool.
Are you willing to destroy your credibility with one good friend to avoid the discomfort of being candid with another?

I sent the guy the resumes as is. I basically said "I know you guys are looking, here are my friends resumes, hopefully this helps, if not, no worries"Excaliber wrote:As you ponder your decision, keep in mind that if you forward that sad resume as is, your job seeking friend isn't the only one who will end up looking like a fool.

Re: Resume problems, what should I do?
I think part of being a friend is being able to be honest and tell them things they need to hear, even if they don't want to hear it. Leave out the part about how it makes you look to your boss to turn in a bad resume. Not telling your friend it sucks, and letting him send it to many employers, hurts his chances of getting a job anywhere. If you were going for a job interview, wouldn't you want your friends to tell you if there's food stuck in your teeth?
Re: Resume problems, what should I do?
I sent him a message that more or less said "You goof, why would you put x y and z on your resume?"Big Tuna wrote:I think part of being a friend is being able to be honest and tell them things they need to hear, even if they don't want to hear it. He then sent me back a diatribe about how X Y and Z got him his last 2 jobs (Not really btw)
I'm gonna drop it, but if he gets hired, I'm going to have his boss/my coworkers husband let him know it wasnt because of X y or Z.
