Guns and "The Good Wife"

Post by grumble »

Last week's episode of "The Good Wife" on CBS had and interesting, yet terrifying scene.

The synopsis of the episode is that the senior partner in the law firm is totally and completely ANTI-2A (this is set in Chicago - go figure). She finds herself being threatened by a former client, and is convinced by a private investigator, that contracts to the firm, to get a handgun and learn to shoot it. She never needed it, and panicked at a noise and almost shot her dog. After that, she decides she really doesn't need the gun (however there is MUCH foreboding, and I think this is going to play out in future episodes).

But I digress...back to the main point...

The PI on the show is teaching her how to handle a handgun. In TWO scenes, yes TWO, the PI instructs her on how unload and clear the weapon..

She says TWICE in the episode..

"Step one - rack the slide to clear the chamber" ** note they did NOT lock the slide open, just racked it and let it fly
"Step two - drop the magazine"
"Your weapon is now unloaded and safe" :smash:

:eek6 :eek6 :eek6

The really sad part is, somebody is going to think this is correct ... I had to rewind this 4 times just to make sure i heard what I thought I heard.

I know!!! I watched the same show and couldn't believe it. The first time it happens, did you notice one of the other attorneys, having NO idea whether the weapon was loaded or not, was holding it in his hand so that muzzle was pointed to his left, directly at one of the other attorneys!!

They have technical advisors for these shows, would it have been so hard for SOMEONE to get it right?

Maybe they'll get sued by someone who gets shot by another person who says they got their gun handling skills from "The Good Wife."

Episode name is "Bad", currently available at:

http://www.cbs.com/primetime/the_good_wife/video/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I think these are all of the gun scenes.

At 2:50 in:

The woman in the group who appears to be familiar, picks up a Desert Eagle.

"Slide the bolt to check for a chambered round" (The slide DID lock back and I may have misheard her exact words)

"Drop the mag and do a physical check of the barrel"

Then she reinserts the mag and releases the slide.

But there is other poor handling visible.

Again at 13:50, dealer demonstrating a pistol.

At 22:12, indoor range.

At 36:48, hears noises in apartment. Gets pistol from night stand.

At 39:55, returns borrowed gun. "Are you scared of it?" "No, I'm liking it."

And then there was the obviously inside the limits of Chicago, boutique gun shop.

In IL it is illegal to handle a firearm without a FOID, most gun shops will not allow you to touch without first showing a FOID.

There are NO gun stores in Chicago.

I have received no replies from the several parties that I sent email to about the sheer idiocy represented in the episode.

I swear on a recent episode of "Castle" a shotgun was found at the scene of a murder. Cop picks up shotgun, notes it is a 12 ga. and comments on the 'hollow points'????? Did anyone else see this or did I imagine the whole thing?

Hollow point slugs? :confused5

Never heard of it.

But now that I looked it up, I have to comment that Julianna Margulies is a hottie. You might remember her from "E.R.", also set in Chicago.

Last April, I had some time to kill before heading to O'Hare to fly home. I stopped at a Cabela's in Hoffman Estates - which is a bit east of the airport.

There was a big banner outside the store that said something about a big gun sale. So, in I walk thinking I am just going to go check out what they call a "big" gun sale in Illinois. Oh my gosh...the place was like a morgue. Yes, they had a lot of guns, but there were maybe 5 shoppers!

As I walked out the door I was chuckling to myself and thinking were that a store in Texas you wouldn't have been able to get near the guns for awhile, let alone weed your way to the front to take a number. :txflag:

I have hollow points for my shotgun - they are .50 caliber sabot rounds, and they are not worth snot through a smooth bore.
