New Mexico CCW moving to Texas

Hello,

I and my wife are New Mexico CCW holders and are moving back to our home state of Texas in the next few months. I have called the Texas CCW permit section and they tell me that they recognize New Mexico as does New Mexico recognizes Texas. What I have not been able to find out is when we move back to Texas and change our permanent residence from New Mexico to Texas will our CCW permits still be valid in New Mexico and therefore recognized in Texas until they expire? I know the New Mexico permits are linked to our Drivers License here, so when we turn in our New Mexico DL's and get Texas DL's what happens. Do we loose our CCW's and have to start over again? Nobody with either state department can really answer my question. Anyone know?

PS. I am retired Texas law enforcement and for 15 years after retirement never owned or fired a firearm. After Vietnam and police work I had all I wanted. Four months ago I came to the aid of a woman in fear of attack and have now incurred the wrath of her attacker who has made it know he is coming after anyone who helped her. It has frightened my Prius loving liberal wife to the point she no longer feels safe and made the decision to learn to shoot and took the CCW training. Into our retirement and after years of public service and now this. I would not change what I did, but it is a hell of a price to pay.

First off, welcome to the forum.

New Mexico indicates it does not issue non-resident licenses, so it is possible when you move out of state your license becomes null and void. However, I would contact the Concealed Carry Unit of the NM Dept. of Public Safety at:

If you will lose your license, then you could potentially be eligible to carry under the LEOSA as a retired law enforcement officer, but your wife will need to take the Texas CHL course and get her Texas license.

One possible option to make sure you don't have a lapse between licenses would be to see if you can find a Texas instructor in New Mexico or take the course if you visit before you move, and get a Texas CHL prior to losing your New Mexico license. That way they would overlap.

Seriously, thank you for your service and your commitment to risk yourself in service to another (John 15:13). I guess this falls under the "no good deed goes unpunished" amendment to Murphy's law. I second KeithB's assessment and would add you also have the motorist protection act which allows you to carry in your vehicle without a license, not perfect but at least you are covered going to and fro.

Welcome to the forum and Texas.

You can get a Pennsylvania non-resident license fairly quickly at low cost. That would make you completely legal in Texas during the transition. I don't have the instructions at my fingertips, but you can find them on the internets.

Also, although Texas law requires you to change your driver license (and vehicle registration, if you import a vehicle to the state) within 30 days, this law is enforced only when you commit some other traffic infraction and are found out. People frequently keep their out-of-state license until they move into a permanent residence in Texas.

The Texas CHL course must be taught in Texas, so you are not likely to find an out-of-state instructor. You would also run into more hassle and expense getting non-resident licenses changed to resident licenses.

Be aware the CHL class ..TO.. actual Plastic in hand- It may take from 30-40 days TO 100+days . See top of this forum for running DPS stickie.

Check the MPA mentioned above for no CHL rules, (the old "Travelling" rules changed - car carry ok with a few exceptions BUT no chl out of the vehicle without a CHL card.)

A lot of the time depends on how fast the background check comes back from your county and previously lived locations. If you lived out of state or your county is slow at processing the check it may take a little longer. However, not near as long as they were taking. They now are getting many completed in half the time they are required to.
