Guys,

I pulled my gun last night for the first time, but it was dark and late, so luckily no one saw me. About 10 PM last night I went to retrieve my trash can and I saw a Pit Bull trotting along the sidewalk in front of my house. He looked my way and growled, so I walked back into my house thinking he was traveling. After 10 minutes or so I went to the curb and started pulling my trash can up to may garage and GRRRR Pit Bull from middle of the street started trotting my direction while growling and staring at me as if I'd provoked him. I let go of the trash can, drew my Bersa UC9 and trotted backwards into my garage.

I looked out of the window, and he stood his ground next to my trash can with what suspiciously looked like a grin on his face. Sooo-I called 911 and watched 4 LEOs chase the dog in circles with pepper spray and noose collar thingy; all it needed was Benny Hilly music. They managed to find the owner who was visiting from CA and somehow managed to lose him. The police decided that because he kept running toward the same car that belonged to the dog's owner, the dog was probably defending the car that was parked across the street from my trash can. Good times.

When a drunk backed into my car and left we had the entire police department come and look at it as there was nothing else for them to do (three cops). I thought my car was a crime scene the way they all rolled up

I have drawn on a pitbull before, same scenario. However, this one didnt stand its ground, it ran off. A few days later i saw it again and felt sorry for it. It had been abandoned and was a harmless pet. But ya just never know.

I understand that some people love these dogs, but I have no use for them because most owners will NOT care for them as needed and they become a lethal threat to the entire neighborhood. My next door neighbors who eventually abandoned their foreclosed home had one that looked to me like a Rottweiler with a Pit Bull head. This dog initially managed to escape by ripping the new 6' privacy fence apart, and soon after its return managed to rip up the boards on my side and got into my yard and woke me up head butting my sliding glass door (when I pulled my cat away from the glass he stopped). They even put him in a chain link cage in the back yard and the dog mangle it. I know these seem like exaggerations, but this animal's strength was magnificent. That dog was the reason I bought my first gun.

I will have no problem shooting a Pit Bull if I'm threatened and I can get a safe shot off. When I drew on the dog my first thought was, "Please don't make me pull this trigger without hearing protection!" but he stopped at the trash can as I trotted backwards.

Embalmo, I too have the same sentiments about pits. But I will tell you what changed my mind. There is a ton of breed specific legislation going around the country to ban pits. However, today I had the pleasure of spending my time in Halletsville at the Texas Dog Hunters Association annual hog hunt. There were probabaly 30 pits in the expo center all on a leash with their owners. Not one time did I see a pit go after another dog nor was there any problem with agressivness towards humans. I realized that today its all about how you raise them. I saw good people who truly love their dogs, and I saw how well manered pits are that come from good homes and owners. On my way home I realized that pits are similar to guns. Just because I dont like pits doesnt mean that people should be banned from owning them.

However, I do relate to your feelings about pits and I understand your comments completley. I just saw a differnt side of the debate today.

I agree-And I've seen good Pits before too, but with a knowledge of their capabilities, It would be foolish to not draw and fire on one that is growling and approaching. And of course that is true with any dangerous breed that is threatening me, or my family, it just happens that this neighborhood is filled with poorly cared for Pit Bulls. A lot of them, however, have left with their owners in similar circumstances to the bad neighbors that I mentioned. The new neighbor, if your curious, has a pair of Pomeranians that would love to visit my yard and head butt my glass ; they would definitely be invited in for snacks and squeaky toys. Does anyone have any experience on dogs and gunfire? I would like to know if I'm in a life threatening situation with a dog, if a miss would the sound still scare the dog away; not that I would intentionally miss, but I possess not the marksmanship of Jack Bauer.

Poor Pits, they get a bad rap, and you hear about "They are bred to be mean" hog wash, they are just dogs, you just have to train them alittle harder in some areas than other dogs, they are VERY smart and learn fast. Regardless, peppery spray and or flashlight

Yep-Maybe so, but I ain't taking any chances with those smart, sweet, little poodles.

If one approaches you growling and theres no owner around, yeah you should be afraid, but if you see one not on a leash just minding its business you should be good.

Hey now! We're a REAL city. We have our share of problems. Young whippersnappers jaywalking, chewing gum, and listening to that long-hair music. We need the police to protect us!

P.S. given that there's only about 10 pf-popo's patrolling a city of 50,000+, I think I'll continue carrying my pistol, thenkyewverramuch
