i am supposed to send back to get my packet.I paid the $140 online as well.Any input on that.Thanks..newbie!

The TRACE number and the PIN are not the same thing.

I am in exactly the same position as the original poster. I applied online, paid with a credit card, received my TRACE number, and verified that my credit card had been charged the $140 by the DPS. But, I have not received anything from DPS.

That's the problem. The packet you are eventually going to receive contains the PIN. You can input the PIN into the DPS's website to track status, but you can't do jack squat with the trace number (not on the website at least).

I sent an email inquiring about the packet that contains my PIN, and the fact that it's been over two weeks, but has not been delivered. Let's just say that the email met with as much success as the attempt at being patient (no response at all from DPS).

Here's the actual link to get to the page you're looking for:

http://www.texasonline.state.tx.us/NASA ... ctTask.jsp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The top half if for new applicants. That's the section you want. The bottom half is for instructors only. So don't go there as it will only show 'no information available' or words to that effect. You want to click on the tab "Track the Status of Your Application" in the upper right hand corner.

If you applied online, the application packet you receive from DPS will have your PIN on the first page.

I'm not quite sure what you all are calling a "trace number" other than a credit card confirmation number which has nothing to do with a PIN number at all.

I saw on another thread that there were delays in DPS sending out application packets to those that applied online. Hopefully they'll be catching up real soon. ;-)

The trace number is what you get after applying online. You get it immediately, it show up on the screen.

My guess is that is is essentially a receipt for payment, or an order confirmation type of thing. It also lets you fill in part of the online application, log off, and then log back in sometime later, input the trace number, and continue where you left off.

The trace number does not seem to have any value (as far as the website is concerned) once you have completed the online form. It is not the PIN, and does not seem to bear any relationship to the PIN. The trace number cannot be used to track the status of the application, you need the PIN for that.

My bad... Not saying your information is bad. I was saying what I posted was incorrect so I removed it to prevent confusion. Guess I still caused confusion haha.

OK more info.Might help the other guy..VIC.. in my situaition too. When i first applied online it did a pop up that i needed a pin number to continue and posted a email addy to the CHL.I wrote them and asked for a pin.Next day they sent me a 4 digit number and i was able to complete the online process and pay etc.
I was not sure it would work but i went to that link posted above, put in my info and that pin and it went to the status pacge and it said...
"Packet mailed"....So i guess i just need to wait some more.VIC...When you did your online application request did you need to put in a pin number?
I might have needed it because i might still be in the system since i had a CHL for 8 years before...not sure.

I do not have a PIN, since I've never had a CHL before.

Here's the sequence of events so far:

1. Went to DPS's CHL application site.
2. Started the online application process.
3. Was issued a Trace Number.
4. Was interrupted before completing the entire online application, had to come back to it the next day.
5. Logged back on to the DPS online application site.
6. Put in my Trace Number so that I could continue filling in the online application.
7. Completed the application and submitted it, including credit card info.
8. Printed out the screen shot of the Trace Number.
9. Waited eleven business days. Nothing arrived in the mail.
10. Verified that my credit card had been charged the $140. It had.
11. Sent an email to DPS inquiring about the fact that no packet had arrived. Included the Trace Number in the email. No response at all. It has been three days since I sent the email.

That's where I stand at this moment.

I never had to input a PIN while filling out or continuing the online application. I did input my Trace Number, but it is not similar to a 4-digit PIN. My Trace Number is 13 characters long and is a mix of letters and numbers.

Ahhh ok Vic, I'm with you now. I have to assume the TRACE number is the temporary number DPS issues to you when you do not complete the online application at one sitting. And it goes away after you've completed it.

I didn't get one as I completed the app at one sitting. Makes sense now! Thanks for the explanation.

Have you called down to DPS to check on the status?

This who i wrote to and they emailed me back the next day....chl@txdps.state.tx.us
I supplied them with my name,Drivers Lic. Number, socail security number and my CHL number that expired in 2004.
They sent the PIN next day.I just did not know that was the same PIN to do status checks with.
When i did complete the online application request for a packet and paid at the end it gave me a couple pages to print out as a reciept.

At top...Please print out and save for your records..
Has may name and address at the top, trace number and transaction date three paragrafs thank you etc and some links at the bottom to
forms you can print out etc.
Paragraph 2 says...
"You may return to this website to check on the status of your application.Once we have
recieved your online application, you will recieve a confirmation statement in the mail from
the Texas Department of Public Safety Concealed Handgun Licennsing Bureau. Please return
confirmation staement to complete your appliocation.DPS cannot process your application
until all required materials and documents are submittied.
Incomplete or inaccurate
information will delay the processing of your application."

So anyway i have not recieved that confirmation staement in the mail.If it shows up i will upate,
maybe will be helpful to others...Thanks guys. :fire

I sent another request to DPS at the same email address as the first request I sent (which is the same address you posted above).

I got a response this time:

"The department was awaiting forms to be printed to create completed application packets. The forms have come in and the packets were sent the weekend of 3/5/10-/3/7/10."

So, if my packet was in the batch mailed between March 5 and March 7, it may well show up today or tomorrow.

Hey All,

I've been lurking, and finally joined. Good to hear that packets are going out, I'm in the same boat.

I called DPS today, and they told me it's running about 3-4 weeks to get the confirmation statement. Oh well, another day of crossing my fingers when the mail is checked. :totap:

Update: OK after applying online and paying the $140 on 03/01/10 and waiting for the Confirmation stuff in the mail.
Today the whole dang package came in the mail.A sheet with my info to correct as needed, employment history and residence etc.
But all the other stuff was in it too and just says to send in with the Form 100 or whatever.
I got the study book, afidavits, fingerprint cards, photo card.I was thinking from the receipt from the online thing
i would get something in the mail that i would have to send back to get all the materails...
So i moved my class from April 24th to March 27th so i am pretty happy now. :hurry: :fire
