Is 4H considered a school "event"? I was told it was an "extracurricular activity" but I don't know if that means it is officially a school activity. Any 4H leaders or parents out there that can give me a solid answer on this? Thanks.

However, if the 4-H function is on school property or a school sanctioned event, then I would consider it school sponsored. Otherwise, I would say just follow the laws for the location. IANAL

I have considered the information from their site and I agree that it is not a school and would not be restricted unless it was in a school building. In order to attend their events the parents have to pay and transportation is up to the parent. I think 4H is just tied to the curriculum of Texas schools thru State programs but are not school functions. Now, maybe the university 4H program is tied into the university itself so it will be restricted. But, 4H was created for soil management education for the children of farmers as a social program by the U.S. government originally but was not in schools. I ask anyone with direct info to chime in. The last thing I want to do is remain ignorant on this and I am sure other CHL holders will need this info too. Thanks Keith B.

On a side note, my son got into 4H because our county finally offered small bore shooting. .22 pistol and rifle competitions are held around April. He will not compete this year but next year. I was never exposed to 4H but they do have a lot of good things to offer school kids and I would invite parents to look into them.

I'd say unless the meetings are at a school then carry is ok. My kids 4H is at our church, which I carry with no problem.

And 4-H is actually administered by the USDA as part of CSREES(Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service), which in turn is administered by the Texas A&M and Prairie View A&M Agricultural Extension Service.

On the local(county) level, the Agricultural Extension Service county agent is a first point of contact, IIRC.

I agree with the above understandings. I'll chime in something extra, for what it is worth. Texas AgriLife Extension Service has a policy (http://aghr.tamu.edu/rules-x/340602X1firearms.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ), prohibiting firearms at "extension events" except for a specified list of exceptions, e.g., the aforementioned riflery, etc. I assume they mean this to apply to Extension employees and perhaps volunteers.
