San Antonio: Security guard accidentally shoots son

San Antonio, yesterday, according to police reports as reported by the media, a security guard was unloading his service piece to clean it when it discharged, hitting his 11-year-old son, who is autistic. The boy is in the hospital and expected to survive.

Seems like there is a lot of this "accidental" shooting situations going on here lately, that involve kids. I am wondering if these are really true stories or just articles planted in the newspaper and on other media by the anti-gun folks. Or maybe because I now carry a gun I just listen more carefully to the news? Don't know, but it is getting pretty bad out there as far as shooting go.

I'm sure it was a "true story", in that the son was actually shot.

On (DATE) I carried my (GUN) on me for (HOURS). I went to (LOCATIONS) and did (ACTIVITIES). The gun did NOT fire one time.

There is just simply more gun owners then there used to be. Not necessarily in this case, but there's more uninformed, inexperienced gun owners out there. So, the more of those we have the more incidents like this will happen I think. Not to mention the fact that media coverage has increased by large amounts over the years as well. So more inexperienced gun owners+increased media coverage=more articles about negligent discharges.

There are several mindless shooting accidents a day in the U.S. Most happen late at night and involve the suspected use of alcohol.

The ones that I post here either involve people who are supposed to know better (as in this case) or monumental stupidity such as hunters shooting at moving brush and hitting a human being or dog.

The only reason that I can give is that I hope people can learn from them. I'm sure everyone who involved in that kind of accident thought it couldn't happen to him.

I emailed an article that some one sent to me, about how Obama is trying to back door gun control/confiscation of guns via the international peace treaty with the help of Hillary Clinton, to Chas Cotton and Elgato, asking them if they had heard of this action. I haven't received a reply as yet. I am just thinking that a lot of this shooting stuff going on is going to really endanger our rights to bare arms. It gives the anti-gun folks a lot of ammunition. I appreciate the fact of members posting all these shooting related accidents as it does make me more aware of gun safety. Was just posting my conspiracy theory. Was not my intent to belittle the shooting posts by any forum member.

The only reason that I can give is that I hope people can learn from them. I'm sure everyone who involved in that kind of accident thought it couldn't happen to him.

As for firearms accidents, the information is a public record (except in cases where a minor injury does not require medical treatment). The government can easily obtain it. The CDC reports on it every few years.

The reason they don't make a big deal out of it is that accidental firearms deaths and injuries are statistically minor. About 800 people are killed in firearms accidents per year in the U.S. That number has been falling throughout recorded history, because of improved safety training and safer firearms.

Firearms deaths are less than 1% of accidental deaths. Motor vehicle crashes, falls, poisoning, suffocation, and drowning are all far worse. The world would be a much safer place if swimming pools and plastic bags were banned.

Of course, every accident is a very serious matter to the person who is shot, and usually the person who causes the accident, especially if they are family members or friends (which they usually are).
