CHL course material?

Post by TEXAS70 »

Is there a place online that I can get the course material for chl so that I can study it for myself before going to the class? I am assuming that there is a course curriculum that states the information that must be covered by the instructor.

Hi TEXAS70, welcome to the forum! Glad to have you with us! :tiphat: There is a wealth of information here at your fingertips and a great bunch of guys & gals to help you on your journey.

This link is the handbook that is given out in CHL class, and it will be your "textbook". It's a great idea to read it before you take your class. I read mine 3 times cover to cover before I took mine:

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/ftp/forms/LS-16.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you're like me, reading it then coming to this forum and asking questions, is a fantastic way to learn CHL rules and law.

Ask as many questions as you want. The more the better. And we ALL learn something when a question is asked. ;-)

Hey there, Honestly not much studying is needed. It is very easy to follow. There was a 87 yr old couple in my class that never used a gun and passed with flying colors. As long as you pay attention, you will be excellent!

Dan, you forgot to mention the requirement for the calculus word problems...in latin.... "rlol" . Maybe the older couple were former math professors!
Actually, DanMan28 was right on with his observation. Listen, take a few notes on anything totally new to you, and you should do fine.
Best of luck.

:iagree: Some people learn things better by reading rather than by hearing. And if you don't understand something you read, you can always ask in class.

Welcome to the Forum TEXAS70. I am sure that you will learn much here. :tiphat:

hello as an instructor i will say to make sure you can SAFELY use your firearm. if possible see if your instructor will be going page by page in the DPS book or using a state approved power point.. i use state approved books, they are easier for a normal person(not a lawyer) to understand.. but keep the dps book near by either in your nightstandor next to the toilet to read.. as you go through the book and compare it to the test questions you will realize only about 25-28 of the questions are answered in the book. the rest we hope you have some common sense..forgot to tell you it is a 50 question test.GOOD LUCK!!!it really is pretty easy, especialy if you have a good instructor.. and if you have a question just ask...

:iagree: Download the LS-16 from DPS website and read it before you take the class. And as above, ask questions.

This link posted above is no longer active. And I can't find the handbook online at the DPS site anymore. Does anyone know where I can find it currently?

Lots of text in that booklet. Some of the most pertinent parts are in Chapters 9 and Sections 30.06, 46.03 and 45.035. Where yes, you may need some explanation(s).

as i remember from taking the written exam. it was so easy that if you did fail it then you have other issues. personally i would work on knowing how to handle your gun and can hit the target decently well with it.get some range time with it is going to help you more then anything in that class.

The DPS site currently says "Form is currently being updated and will be available soon."

I have never given that out in class.

I have written a student work and guide that I hand out. Written in plain English with the laws as support.

It is a good booklet to have.
