ONLINE INSTRUCTOR RENEWAL EXAM--Certif. issued in 37 days!!
To access it you need to go the the Instructors Section at the DPS site and click on 'Online Instructor Renewal Exam'. You will then then be prompted to enter the password, which is the same as you use to access the Instructor Section to get course material, student exams and scoresheets etc. If you don't recall it you can email DPS and they will email it back to you.
It is a 50 question exam, just about like the paper ones we took in class.
If you do not pass it in three trys, you have to join one of the scheduled 'in person' renewal sessions.
After successfully completing the exam, you are advised to print your results which have just been submitted to DPS. Then there is an 'exit' button with no other instructions.
I clicked the 'exit' and the window closed. There were no follow up instructions on paying money or arranging for the proficiency exam so I still do not know about the mechanics of completing that process. I am awaiting a return phone call with more info and will make everyone aware of that as soon as I get the info.
OK! just got the return call.
1. Submit the online application and pay the money BEFORE taking the test.
2. The proficiency exam will not be required until we go in person for the 2011 renewal.
3. They will soon be sending the fingerprint cards and personal history update to be completed as any renewal.
That appears to be IT.
I did suggest that they provide all of this info as an intro page before begining the test. She noted that it was still a work in progress. As always, very courteous and helpful on the phone
EDITED: To change title to less self congratulatory wording with wider interest.

Re: ONLINE INSTRUCTOR RENEWAL EXAM NOW ACTIVE
Do I understand it correctly that all the paperwork can be done online, but we will still have to go shoot in Austin?

No. I guess was not as clear as I should have been. This only works to renew every other renewal. The ones in between have to be done in person as we have in the past. They want you to renew at least once in a four year period to be sure you get the more indepth info. The process to renew an instructors certificate online goes as follows:
1. Go to the website and submit your application online and pay the $100 fee. You can also do this by snail mail if you want to, or just email them requesting the packet.
2. They will then send you a packet in the mail with the same two affidavits and one authorization form to release information as our students submit after notarization. The packet also includes one fingerprint card and a printed copy of the application (which already has filled in the information you submitted online, if you went that route) which you need to sign and return with the other documents. The signed application does not need notarization.
3. You then return the completed documents along with the completed fingerprint card back to DPS in an envelope that they provide.
4. Then you wait.
5. The shooting proficiency test is waived for this renewal. It will be taken again in conjuction with in-person renewals.
Remember, this process is available only if your last application was your original, or another in-person class. This way you can continue to use the in-person process as we always have if you want to. If you prefer the online route, you may use that process on alternate renewals.
Personally, I like the in-person sessions because there is always a lot of good information and it is a good opportunity to ask questions, interact with DPS staff and provide feedback to them personally. You can also learn presentation techniques. Additionally, I live in Austin and it generally is not inconvenient for me to get to the classes. If I lived in El Paso, Brownsville, Orange, or Amarillo, I might feel differently.
My personal situation this time is that due to a number of personal, and professional reasons, including a relocation, last year I could not get their times to match up with my availability. My certificate expired Dec. 31, 2009. This process has been an easy one so far and a blessing.
I hope this more fully answers your questions.

Re: ONLINE INSTRUCTOR RENEWAL EXAM NOW ACTIVE
ok i'm cool with that :)
Thanks for taking the time to write all that out. It refreshed my memory to what they told us the first of December. They were hedging their bets, but what you wrote is near exact to their most hoped for scenario. In my opinion, it's great.
I'm like you, I like class. Mostly because I want to hear other folks ask questions that I never think of. :)

Personally, I like the idea of going to the classes. You always get a lot more from the DPS instructors than what is in the book. And going to Florence to shoot is a hoot!

Checked the website today and there it was "Application Completed-License Issued or Certificate Active"
I am legal to instruct again. It only took 37 days and no shooting test was required.
Of course, the shooting test is the funnest part of the entire process.
