Would you shoot anything special (ammo)
I use the cheapest ammo I can find, right now its Federal Champion @9.49 at Walmart, I also shoot Monarch, Wolf or really what ever is the best deal. I shoot mainly my Glocks and AK, with my AR not as much, I have never had any problems, however I do not have stock barrels, nor guns for that matter. If I do have a malfunction its just good practice cause its gonna happen.
As far as the class shooting portion would you take something different (more accurate)? I plan on taking the Federal Champion if it puts holes in the target. I also have some Fiocchi too

Re: Would you shoot anything special (ammo)
Unless DPS has changed their policy for the CHL Instructor shooting qualification, they will want you to use SAAMI spec ammo. They had a list last year with acceptable brands of ammo. Federal, Winchester, Black Hills, Remington, Hornaday, Speer, CCI, etc are all acceptable. Monarch, Wolf, Seller & Belliott are not, IIRC. The basic rule is that if the ammo is made in the US, it typically meets SAAMI specs, if it isn't made here, it doesn't meet the DPS requirements.
Federal is the cheapest that I've found since Walmart has gotten away from CCI.

There is a list of acceptable manufacturers in the packet, and they specify only brass cases.

I got the list but I am referring to FMJ vs JHP vs wad cutter vs soft point vs subsonic heavyweight vs lightweight

I go the cheapest. I look at it as throwing a hundred rounds away for my wife and I. Plus whatever we shoot as practice rounds, for feel.
Although I do have a soft spot for the pretty holes wad cutters make in targets.

edit: The Federal Independence Ammo is IMPORTED by Federal it may not be allowed. I'm going to be shooting some Remington UMC 130 gr FMJ that has been on my shelf for a while - - - it has a $7.95 price tag on some of the boxes

Unless you can't hit the broadside of a barn while standing inside the barn, don't sweat the shooting. It's the same distances and rounds you got to shoot when you did your CHL class, only you get to do it TWICE!
You have to be a little better shot, and the targets are timed (turn out, turn in) on the clock, but there is plenty of time to get all the rounds in the paper.
The student next to me helped me out a little by punching a few holes in my no-score white space, but the 38 made some little holes compared to my 45, so I was able to make my case for "hey, that's not mine!"
I ate no-doze and coffee for 4 days in class just so I could earn the chance to go shoot at Florence! Savor it. I can't wait to go back.

I stopped by ATG in Brenham today while out riding my motorcycle, I ordered this morning online and picked it up at noon.I got some pretty hole 38sp wadcutters @16.95 box and several hundred round of defensive 9mm,40 and 12gauge. Luckily I could fit it in the saddle bags. This place is seriously moving the ammo.
