Santa Fe: Man no-billed in self-defense shooting

Post by seamusTX »

In October 2009, one Robert Ott of Santa Fe fatally shot Michael Wayne Hansen, who had reportedly drawn a weapon on him in front of his home.

Mr. Ott had previously banned Hansen from the bait camp that he owns, and Hansen had previously threatened to kill him. However, police knew of no previous physical altercations.

Earlier story: http://www.galvnews.com/story.lasso?ewc ... 6cd18db18a" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In January, someone took pot-shots at Mr. Ott's house. That incident was not solved: http://www.galvnews.com/story.lasso?ewc ... cd5a3fcc86" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Note the length of time and the thoroughness of the investigation for a case that looks like clear-cut self defense.

Hansen's possible motives have not come to light.

In that shooting, Ott and Hansen had been in a conflict about Ott having barred Hansen from a local bar, police said. When Hansen drove his red pickup into the driveway, Ott left his house, armed with a shotgun.
Jim,

Am I missing something, is "bait camp" a slang term for a "bar?" Or, is one of the reporters wrong? Just curious.

A bait camp is an establishment adjacent to some body of water that sells bait. Many of them sell beer for consumption on premises and serve some kind of food, usually hamburgers.

Hall’s Bayou Bait Camp is a real place. I've never been there.

I don't know why they are called camps. They usually are permanent structures ranging from shacks to elaborate buildings.

A few Cajuns that I have met call their fishing places "camps". From their descriptions some of them are stuctures such as a small cabin, a mobile home, a trailer parked on their land, or even a tent. Maybe the same as a "bait camp"? :headscratch

According to a newspaper story, a sample from the handgun that the deceased Mr. Hansen had when he died was submitted for DNA analysis.

Mr. Hansen's wife said that she had never seen the handgun until she saw it in a police photo.

I really don't know Santa Fe that well, though I have been going there for years. I saw a sign that said "Justice for Mike Hansen" as recently as last week.
