I have seen the media use the term “packing heat” when talking about people carrying a gun for self protection. Not only have I seen U.S. media use that term but I just saw the Canadian “National Post” use it (“Some Americans are rallying for the right to pack heat”).
My question is who talks that way? I have never heard a CHL holder or any gun owner use that term. I think that was a term used in the 1920s or 30s.
God Bless America, and please hurry. When I was young I knew all the answers. When I got older I started to realize I just hadn’t quite understood the questions.-Me
Too many old 1930's gangster movies with Cagney, Bogart, and Edward G. Robinson on the late late movie?

Once upon a time long, long ago I was in Throckmorton for a family reunion weekend, and about 4 of my cousins & I went camping on one of the family's places. When it started getting dark, we broke out the camp cooking tools, unrolled our bedrolls, etc.
My cousin asked the group if anyone had "packed heat" Being the youngest in the group, I quickly said "Yes! I packed heat!".
I pulled out a can of Sterno.
It took me a while to figure out why they were laughing. I never lived that one down.

You won't live it down here, either!

About 3 weeks ago I was at my best friend's house. His wife was there standing beside me and slightly behind. She is a former LEO and knows that I carry. At one point she reaches over and puts her hand on the bump being formed by my cell phone, and goes "I thought you might be packing heat" when she realized it was just my blackberry. I tell her, "I am, it's on the other side" and pull up my shirt to show her my commander in a crossbreed holster.

(Nice to know someone else has that kind of story!)
Around here: Dynoblue talks about her "gat." Since the term started with her younger-son-turned-Marine-Corps-Sergeant, and her "gat" is a .45, well, I sorta let her....

I didn’t think anyone under 40 would even know what “packing heat” means. Gat, now that’s an old one. Haven’t heard that one in years.

I've used the Packing Heat term before when referring to my roscoe...but then, I'm on the other side of being AARP-eligible

I do often ask my wife if she is packing, but it usually turns out to be wishful thinking. (just kidding I would be lost without my good lady)
