Re: Who talks like that?
I work with a guy who used to live in Chicago. We talked guns one day, and he calls me up a week later and he asks, "do you know anyone with a heater for sale?". I said, "well, are you looking for gas or electric?..."
The silence was deafening.

I am well beyond 40!VoiceofReason wrote:I didn’t think anyone under 40 would even know what “packing heat” means. The Annoyed Man wrote:I used the term in another thread just yesterday.
LINKEYMy wife has a CHL and she packs heat...Gat, now that’s an old one. Haven’t heard that one in years.

...and I not only use the word "Gat" sometimes (strictly tongue in cheek), I also use the words "Roscoe," and "Strapped."

Now what does "gat" stand for? I know it means gun but where did it come from? Also on the preview for "Death at a Funeral" Martin Laurence calls it a "gat" I've just never heard the term before.

Its short for 'gatling gun'. Why that was chosen as slang for handgun? who knows.

Far as I know, it just came from the old gangster movies (y'know, the ones with the black sedans). It could have referred to a chopper (as in "Gatling"), but I always thought it was just generic for a handgun.CrimsonSoul wrote:Now what does "gat" stand for? Well, he was looking for gas of course. How else do you explain how a semi-auto works?mctowalot wrote:I work with a guy who used to live in Chicago. You are right. I just realized my mistake when I looked up Gat.ghostrider wrote:clearly you don't listen to a lot of rap music :-)Gat, now that’s an old one. Haven’t heard that one in years.
Urban Dictionary
"Gat: Slang for a Fire arm. Originally developed by mafiosi in the Prohibition era to refer to their thompson submachine guns, but is now adopted to refer to any gun, and is usually used in the urban areas and in the rap community"
God Bless America, and please hurry.
