League City: Home invasion robbers target store owners

Post by seamusTX »

A gang of home invasion robbers apparently is targeting store owners in the Clear Lake area. Two robberies were reported Friday. Police suspect that the robbers followed store owners who were closing businesses and might have had a lot of cash.

The gang was described as four or five armed black men who spoke a language other than English.

This is a specialized type of robbery: Criminals go after Asians who own small businesses, thinking (often correctly) that the victims keep a lot of cash and are not likely to be armed.

Clear Lake is southeast of Houston, around Johnson Space Center, for those of you who live in the Netherlands. ;-)

This just brings to light the fact that you aren't really ever 100% safe anywhere. As a BOI Galvestonian I thought moving to the mainland..CLear LAke in particular would be a safer environment for my kids...which in some cases it is...but crime knows no boundaries. My car was stolen out of my own driveway in the Brittany Lakes subdivison of League City. We have been on heightened awareness ever since. That really taught us a big lesson.

The Clear Lake area is easy picking for criminals who can drive from Houston and get in and out quickly on I-45. There are also plenty of home-grown criminals there. I've noted quite a few incidents where people were robbed at shopping malls or in their homes close to I-45.

League City police released the proverbial artist's sketches of the suspects:

It seems the two robbery victim families knew each other. In my purely amateur opinion, this sounds to me like an inter-ethnic crime, where the robbers knew about the victims through some degree of relationship. Chinese communities in the U.S. used to be notorious for this kind of thing (cf. tong gang).
