What else can be done to further knowledge about CC?

Post by cubbyjg »

I already have my license and attended a great CHL class. I have been carrying for a couple of months already and have not ran into any issues. However, after spending some time on this forum, i kind of feel that my knowledge regarding the law and situations still can be improved. Ive read through the handbook a couple of times and plan on reading through it again on my flight when i go on vacation soon. Besides this forum and the handbook, what else can i read/view to increase my knowledge about CC in Texas? I feel the more i know, the more situations i can play out in my head ahead of time so i can react better if a situation arises and i have to draw/use my weapon, which i hope i never have to do.

I know how you feel, cubbyjg. The more you know, the more you realize what you don't know. ;-)

Cougertex makes a good suggestion.

There is a veritable shopping basket of books and videos and self training aids right here in the "Books & Videos" section of the General Forum. To many to list.

Take a course on defensive shooting tactics if your budget allows(they can be expensive). Excellent training.

To improve your skills become involved in shooting competitions like IDPA, IPSC, ICORE & More.

The list is almost endless.

Take the NRA class PPOH [Personal Protection Outside the Home]. It is relatively inexpensive and very informative. If you can't find the class you read the book.

Reading the CHL Handbook is one thing  ...just don't forget and "practice" drawing your "invisible gun" from your "invisible holster" ... you'll not only have a most unenjoyable flight with six strange people sitting on you in the aisle ... but the federal :rules: greeting committee when the flight lands may also be not exactly what you hoped your vacation would be!
And the airlines :evil2: will probably add an additional fee for all of the fun.

Be careful out there.

Does anyone know what the most current CHL handbook is. The most current one I have is 2005-2006? And can you still call DPS and get a hard copy instead of down loading it?

Thanks, Stan

2009-2010 is the current version -- It comes in the CHL license packet from DPS, if you wanted to order one.

Thanks sjf - just ordered it over the phone. Spoke to a nice lady who answered the phone on the first ring. Things have really changed there.
