Well I said I would open the bashing Travis topic for moving to California. Y'all be nice. I'm not sure how long I'll be there maybe a year or two or maybe until the end of summer. I talked to the placer county sherriff which is who gives out the handgun "permit" I guess you could call it. He said 210$ for two years, kinda steep but there is no mpa there. I'm just very hesitant because I will have to register my gun with the county. I really don't like the idea of that. Other than not moving there what would y'all do?

Be quite thankful you found a Sheriff that will lissue you a CCW license! Those are hard to get in the PRK.

I was born and grew up in California and moved to Texas last year. Everyone needs to do their thing. As I said in the other thread, don't forget to send in a form and fee for your handguns to the state. http://www.ag.ca.gov/firearms/ab991.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The CA DOJ firearm site is pretty helpful with firearms laws and regulations. If you buy your handgun ammo online, better do it once you move into the state. As of February 1, 2011, you have to buy handgun ammo face to face and you must submit a thumbprint and fill out a form.

That said, if you're not a skier or snowboarder, you may want to consider taking it up. Living in Placer county, you will nice and close to some great ski resorts. Good luck to you.

Understand one thing though (at least, this is how it used to be, and I don't see that it would have changed), and that is that your county issued CCW permit is good in the issuing county, and that it is at the discretion of the sheriffs of the other counties as to whether or not to they will recognize it in their counties. So while you may carry in Placer county, you may not be able to carry in Alameda or Los Angeles counties. Again, I'm not that up to date on this, so I would follow up on that so as to avoid trouble.

A very good source of what is going on vis-a-vis gun rights and CCW in California is CalGuns.net, which also has an active forum with some great information, just like this one. I have posted there, under the same name, but in a limited fashion.

One last note... If you have any AR15/AK47/etc. type rifles, either sell them, store them here, or get ready to butcher them to bring them into compliance with California law; because most of what passes as legal here is definitely not so there. For instance, your magazine capacity is limited to 10 rounds (for all weapons, including pistols). Your AR magazine must be fixed in place and non-removable (you can actually buy parts to perform this abomination to your rifle). It becomes a "top-loader" which is reloaded by pulling the receiver pin, breaking open the receiver, and loading the magazine from the top. Your AR15 may not have a pistol grip. It may not have a flash hider. For all I know, AKs may be completely illegal there. And as far as buying ammo online, some online vendors are going to be ceasing selling into California, so your only recourse to going through the new draconian ammo laws will be to take trips into Nevada/Arizona/Oregon to buy your ammo in bulk and then bring it back into the state.

That state is pure D messed up.

Man TAM...after reading all of that ,which I had previously researched while still living there, I am so glad I can go into Academy and buy an AR off the rack and leave with it that day. It didn't take long for the Texas mindset to set in.

That's what I was thinking the 210$ is worth the peace of mind. All I will be taking is my G27. The ak's will be staying in the safe at the parents. I'm kinda thinking my dad and brother are pushing me to go so they can play with all the toys I'm leaving behind. I have a feeling when I come back my two cases of 7.62x39 will be mysteriously missing. Thank you for the replies and the links. If there's any bow hunters out there pm me because I have a feeling I won't be using that Hoyt for a while. I talked to the Cordova shooting range and I think I found my new home for shooting. I'll be filling y'all in on the wacky laws that I come across when I get there I'm sure it will be interesting.

If you get down to L.A., check out the Angeles Shooting Range in Little Tujunga Canyon. It's a nice facility, and the rifle range goes put to 750 yards.

I can't recommend the Central Coast area enough...of course I went to school there so I may be a little biased.
