Re: We want to get a dog...
I just wish to thank everyone in this thread for saying "spayed".
"Spaded" is what happened to a "shovel-headed dog": the one you hit in the head with a shovel because they're just so worthless.
So worthless that you drownded them.
Before going to Walmark's.
In Shreezpote.
And just for the record, this isn't any kind of "bonics", these are examples I hear all the time from people of every persuasion!

I know - my father-in-law says "spaded" and it drives me CRAZY!!! I had to un-teach my husband that word because he had grown up hearing it wrong. *sigh* At least hubby realized immediately what was up when I told him. :)chabouk wrote:I just wish to thank everyone in this thread for saying "spayed".

I guess I need to shop for a new vet. Mine wants $135 to neuter the five year old Jack Russel we adopted.

Now that price isn't so bad if it includes Pre-anesthetic blood work and pain meds to take home.
Re: We want to get a dog...
Wow. I spend $40/week on dog food. That works out to...let's see....($40x52) x 12 years (average life span for my dogs) = $24,960 just in food for my hounds. Add vet bills and I'm sure my dogs will cost me in the range of $50-100k over their lives.cajunautoxer wrote:I recently read an article that estimated if you owned a dog from puppy to death the average cost for that dog is $8k
A small price to pay for what they provide for me.
I believe dogs are a manifestation of God on Earth to teach us what unconditional love is.
I also have two cats.
The purpose of cats is to humble us so we don't think we're as great as our dogs make us think we are.

I'm not sure - they said they like to keep them overnight. He had a mild positive on the heartworm test. On the vets advice, we are going to check again after 6 months of heartworm meds. If all goes well there, then we'll lighten his load.cajunautoxer wrote:davidtx wrote:I guess I need to shop for a new vet. Mine wants $135 to neuter the five year old Jack Russel we adopted.

davidtx - They probably want to keep him overnight to make sure he doesn't have complications from the heartworms. My vet said they can spay/neuter while a pup has heartworms but they prefer not to.
Well, we are thoroughly enjoying our puppy and he is very mannerly! He already will walk on a leash to go to the backyard without fuss, knows what "outside", "inside", and "go potty" means, will (inconsistently) sit for a treat, and will whine when he needs to go potty. He's even started moving towards the door while whining!
I didn't feel well last night and just sat on the floor with him so he had company, even if it was boring company. At first he seemed puzzled as to why I wouldn't play, then he laid in my lap for 20 minutes letting me pet him. He's such a sweetie. He just wants to help out...when I'm cleaning up his accidents, when I'm making his dinner, when I'm sweeping the floor...he's right there with his nose in it!

Coolest dog you'll ever meet unless he finds cat poop

and the Shanker. Look at the coiled spring ready to leap at your throat!

Perfect guard dogs. at 8in tall they are already ducking from the incoming!

Random,
I taught my dogs to ring a bell suspended from the doorknob when they want to go outside. Works great, occasionally one of the dogs (usually the cardigan) will just lay down next to the door and hit the bell every 2 minutes or so to go out and chase lizards or something, then the bell goes away for a while.

More photos of our little guy! He is DEFINITELY spoiled, since we treat him like our baby, but he is expected to follow any commands given. He really exceeds our expectations, and is a little too smart for his own good sometimes.
That's his Ultimate Boomerang...it's pretty much the only soft toy that he hasn't been able to destroy. 5 stars!

Daddy just woke up and puppy wanted to play. He loves it when we throw his Kong toy since it bounces erratically.

He really likes car rides! He'll sit quietly and just watch out the window for the entire ride. Most rides are <15 minutes long but he also did well on a 2 hour (each way) trip yesterday!

He also likes his Kong Treat Ball and will throw it across the room to make the treats fall out! It's also difficult for him to remove peanut butter from the ball, so it keeps him occupied for up to an hour.

Re: We want to get a dog...
Not to bring anything down, but we had to say goodbye to our last dog last week...It sure is a quiet house now...
We probably won't get into another long term relationship for a few years, so we can be a little more free to take some time to travel and not have to worry so much about them...
Our guy was a rescued Dalmatian, and we got him when he was pretty young, so we did the best we could and gave him a very good home, and it was extremely hard to let him go...
He's with his sister now, and I am sure they'll be waiting for me someday...
I can't wait!

Re: We want to get a dog...
So many people we encounter have asked us what kind of dog our Phydeaux is, we sent off for one of those DNA kits (~$50)to find out. We got the results a couple of days ago. For those not familiar with what to expect, DNA contributions are expressed in levels. For a dog to have a level 1 contribution, one parent would have to be a pure bred dog. Although it is a little hard to believe, Phydeaux's heritage was reported as:
Level 2 (37-74%) Afgan Hound
Level 3 (20-36%) Pekingnese
Level 5 (less than 10%) - Beagle, Burnese Mountain Dog and Chihuahua
By the way, the gas problem she had when we first brought her home from the animal shelter ended in just a couple of days with a decent diet. Like an Afgan Hound, she has hair and not fur and does not seem to shed.
