Fishing License/SS#

Post by martywj »

Mods feel free to move this if have posted in wrong place.

My wife hasn't had a fishing license since the early 90's, and I haven't had one since 1999 or 2000. Reason was we got into motorcycling and just didn't have time. Reason I had one more recent than her was my brothers and I went fishing some with our Dad when he was still living.

Anyway I went to get one yesterday as did she, and had to give her social security number in order to get it. I didn't however.

When did they start this? They said it had something with people that owe back child support??

Not sure about fishin, but it's been required to buy hunting license for quite some time. And yep, child support was I think the reason given.

Um, what is the connection between a hunting/fishing license and child support?

Hunting and fishing are considered privelages in the state. if you want to exercise that privelage, the state wants to ensure that you are not behind in court ordered child support with no arrangements made to get current.

When my first wife and I divorced I paid child support for years and have no sympathy with anyone who refuses to pay to support their children.

This policy applies to many other licenses issued by the State of Texas. I's not only for child support but, student loans etc.

Ok, that makes more sense. I thought it might have something to do with that, but I wasn't sure.

While I like the states position on the matter, I don't like having to provide my SSN.
