June 14, 1775 The Continental Congress established the Continental Army the precursor of the modern U. S. Army. Happy 235th birthday to all my Army brothers.

In 1777 congress established the stars and stripes as our national ensign on this flag day all Army personnel pledge "This we'll defend."

What the Marine Corps won't admit is that they have not been in continuous service. There was a period of time for 10-11 years in the 18th century where they had been effectively disbanded. I didn't believe this when I attended Staff Academy in Quantico, VA but further research tends to lend credence to the supposition.
One of the first clues was when you look at any listing of the Marine Corps Commandants and their dates of assignment. You will find a big gap. Freaked me out when I learned this, as I was young and gung-ho.
