iPhone 4

Post by pbwalker »

Anyone upgrading? I'm looking forward to it! My 3G is on its last leg and is going to my 2 year old...for YouTube and Educational Games. I never saw the need to upgrade to a 3GS, but I am looking forward to the features on the 4.

(and I had to make a joke at Abraham... :smilelol5: )

I was lucky enough to get a preorder the first day. I spent all day trying lol. I didn't see a reason to upgrade to the 3GS but my battery is shot on my 3G and its just getting really dated. I do wish they would open it up more, I'm tired of jailbreaking to get the access I need.

Now I just hope someone I know gets one soon so I can try out the video calling. The only problem is I pray to god my parents don't get one...

I managed to get in on the pre-order. My 3G is 2 years old and the volume control knob is gone, the ringer switch is kaputs, and I have a few rows of dead pixels in the middle of the screen. The battery life has also dropped considerably. I've been milking it for the last several months, expecting the new model to come out this summer.

just be sure to get a case and screen protector, I hope they don't sell out. My iPad got a nice scratch by the time I found one... :-(

I won't be getting one, not this year. I am days away from one year with my 3GS, and it's still running great. The better half has a 3G, and managed a successful preorder.

If the pattern holds, I'll consider an upgrade next summer, to a 4GS or a 5, depending on what apple does. Or I may stick with this one...I usually keep a phone til it quits working--if I like it.

The Droid does. There is a new Droid coming out soon so if you are undecided you might want to delay a purchase of an iPhone.

I bought an HTC Droid Incredible on the first day they came out. If Verizon had the iPhone, I would have probably gotten one. I'm a wall to wall, floor to ceiling, 24/7 Mac guy. We own 5 of them. But they didn't have them, I needed a new phone, and the Droid Incredible was a very good substitute. I have no regrets about getting it, except that it is a 3G device. I couldn't wait at the time until Verizon activated their 4G system.

If I could install OSX on any hardware I want to I'd prob. be a mac guy too. I've hackintoshed a few PC's but I'd rather it be easy to install.

I have the 3gs and am not elligible for the discounted pricing until January. If RadioShack is still offering the $200 trade in for the 3gs at that time I'll probably upgrade since it would be free. Otherwise i'll likely hold off. The 3gs will take advantage of most features of the 4 software and I don't see the need for video calling at this point.

3 questions for all you iPhone owners.......

I am considering getting a new iPhone4. I have never had any iPhone before. I am waiting for my local AT&T tower to upgrade from EDGE to 3G (which is supposed to happen the end of this Month).

Question 1: Does the iPhone4 work on EDGE and if so is it actually usable while I am waiting for the tower to upgrade to 3G?

Question 2: If yes to Q1, then when the tower actually goes to 3G, would the iPhone4 work even better than EDGE? I ask this because I am in a rural area and although they may upgrade the equipment at the tower to 3G, I would bet that the link from the tower to the network will not be upgraded to fiber optic.

Question 3: What is the advantage of 16gb or 32gb memory over the standard 8gb? If I don't do a lot of movies or whatever like that, is the memory not that important? Or, is the more memory required for some of the apps?

And finally, with the upgrade to 3G of my local tower and no upgrade of the trunk to fiber optic, should I just forget about the iPhone4 and consider a discounted price for the 3GS? Or, forget about an iPhone altogether?

Thanks!

Yes

Likely, but I don't speak for AT&T :)

I have a 16gb 3GS. I have no songs on it, about 300 photos/movies I've taken, and 35 installed apps (a lot, really). I still have 13Gb of space left over.

Get the 16gb iPhone4, unless you want to store your entire collection of music :) Even when I travel and drop a few movies on it, I don't come close to using up the memory.

Good question, and I can't answer that. I think you will see a HUGE improvement in performance with EDGE vs 3G. Unless you really want the iPhone 4 features (like I do, I'm such a nerd :) ), then the 3gs is a great phone.

I just recently acquired a free 32GB iPhone 3Gs and I like it. There are some things that were incredibly easy with my Blackberry that are incredibly difficult with my iPhone. I'm not a Mac fan, but I can live with an iPhone. See no reason to get an iPhone 4 just yet though.

Thanks for the answers.

I guess I will just continue to wait till the tower goes to 3G and after it does I will go to the local AT&T Store in Sherman to check out the iPhone 4 when it is actually in the store (around middle of July I guess).

I will be in the AT&T store anyway to get a 3G Lightening USB connect so that I can then drop this Sprint Mi-Fi that I am using now. I am right on the edge of the coverage for Sprint and have 1 bar or less on the signal from their 3G tower which is North of me about 10 miles.

Wow what do you guys do to your iphones? I still have the first gen iphone (jailbroken) and the only thing that's "wrong" with it is the speakers are quieter than when I first got it, my wife still has the first gen iphone too and hers works perfectly. But when I get the money we're both upgrading to the Iphone 4
