In Need Of Bullet Casting Supplies

Post by SeaHawk »

I have been reading this forum for a few months but never posted. Now I think it's time I become visible.

I have been AWOL from the range and reloading bench for about 15 years. Recently I found my way back and have been enjoying it very much.

I'm in need of bullet casting metals. Can anyone point me to a good source of alloys or individual metals for alloying something similar to Lyman #2 alloy (90-5-5)?

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Midway and some others have alloys, For many years I have used wheel weights, they work well for pistol bullets. Check with tire shops. They used to give them to you but i suspect that you will have to pay for them now days. Midway has moulds and such.

I've not ordered from them, but I've heard this is a good place:

longtooth, Hello and thanks for the introduction.

Thanks to all for the helpful responses to my question.

ghostrider, Thanks for your suggestion. I spent most of the day yesterday searching for suppliers and ordered 60# of Lyman #2 from rotometals. It was $2.32 /lb with a small discount for over 59# order. Also free shipping over $100.00 so the total for 60lbs was $132.00. Not too bad for a virgin metals alloy!

Just got confirmation from Natchez that my new bullet moulds and loading dies for the .40 and .380 are in the mail. I already have all other components so I should be having lotsa fun soon. :hurry:

Again, thanks to everyone for your helpful suggestions.

AndyC, Thank you, sir. It looks like your source of Lyman #2 is a few pennies cheaper than what I just ordered.

I bookmarked the site for my next purchase.

Thanks.

I'm a little late to this thread, but I'll chime in as a bullet caster.

It's a little out of the way for you, but might be worth the trip if you have business down here anyway...

Lead Products Company in Houston (http://www.leadproducts.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) sells a "hardball" alloy that's 6% antimony, 2% tin that casts quite nicely. They sell it in approx. 27# ingots with a price break at 100#.

I'm actually considering another buy in the next few weeks (I'm down to about 60# on hand)...maybe we can work something out for a group buy of sorts--They have another price break at I believe the 250# mark.

I've also found a few scrap metal dealers in the Houston area that will sell scrap lead (mixed stuff, some wheel weights, some wall flashing, some roof jacks, etc.) in the neighborhood of $0.55/#, and some even cheaper (haven't bought any from them yet--not set up with a turkey fryer and such as of yet).

cbunt1,

Thank you for your input. It's never too late to teach me something new about bullet casting, all ideas are greatly appreciated. We may be able to work some kind of bulk buy deal since my 60 pounds has been nearly all converted to projectiles already. I only have 20 lbs. left and I am getting nervous already.:

I can't seem to find much specific info on the link you posted. Please PM me or send e-mail with price and any info you may have available.

I had excellent results with Lyman #2 (90-5-5)for over 30 years and hate to change now but the "hardball" can easily be bumped into my fav alloy so long as the quantities are known. I have worked up some superbly accurate loads for .380 Auto .357 Mag and .40 S&W which are going to require lots of alloy to satisfy my shooting addiction.:

I have targets to post from my recent alloy buy and range sessions. Just haven't had time to do the photo resizing because I've been enjoying casting and shooting too much.

Thanks for your input and I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
