Yesterday, we went on a tour of the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco.
It's off I-35 at exit 335B. 335 is the nearest mile marker for those of
you who can do quick math from your own I-35 exit's mile marker.
The entrance fee is only $6 for adults, but if you go to the Waco Visitor's
Bureau website (sorry, don't have the addy handy), you can print off a
coupon to get $1 off up to 4 people. I printed off a few extra and gave
them to other visitors who were going to the Museum. Share the wealth,
you know.
The Texas Ranger's Museum has a scenic location, directly on the Brazos River,
and they have multiple concrete picnic tables with sun covers.
Inside they show a 44 minute long movie on the Texas Ranger history, produced
by the History Channel IIRC.
Of course the history of the Rangers is quite interesting, but this building could outfit
a small army with the amount of arms which it contains.
They have so many interesting weapons, I could never recount them all.
The Rangers were allowed to have either revolvers or 1911's. It seems to me that as
soon as the 1911 was available, the majority of Rangers preferred them to revolvers.
Their collection of finely engraved weapons is amazing.
They have a 3 shot derringer on display with the 3 barrels stacked vertically. They have
finely engraved guns of all descriptions. They have a golden revolver with a long (12"?)
barrel. They have a fine collection of 1800's Colt revolvers. They have a derringer which
fits into a niche molded into a rodeo-winner sized belt buckle. They have a long gun with
which Ranger Frank Hamer killed Bonnie and Clyde. They have a "revolver rifle" - picture
a wheelgun's cylinder, then just insert into a long rifle. There you go!
They have a section on weapons altered illegally by criminals, such as sawed off shotties and
guns converted to full auto. The guns on display were sourced only from Waco PD and the
McClennan County Sheriff's Dept. (greater Waco's county).
The Museum is not posted 30.06, nor does it even have any non-compliant gunbusters signs.
There are no metal detectors or obvious LEO presence. They keep the building almost chilly,
so a light jacket might be in order for those who get cold easily.
I highly recommend a visit to the Texas Ranger Museum. We were there 2.5 hours and I
didn't read everything. Common sense overruled OCD to some extent. :-)
