A caveat, if I may. You may want to disguise your in-public pat checks, say with an open vehicle door, especially if you're first starting the technique and aren't fully smooth at disguising it.
I say this because pickpockets have admitted to watching people's pocket checks to know which ones to hit. In other words, if you're sporting a pair of 5 pocket Wranglers and you pat check front left and back left, you've advertised that you probably have your wallet and keys in those pockets.
You may want to check all your pockets, just as a camouflage technique.

Get in a routine of some kind.....I use the "pat check" as well. In addition, everything has its place. Work ID, wallet, keys, cell phone, firearm, etc. Everything I carry has its place in the home. The same location time and again. You will never hear me say, "Honey, have you seen my keys?", although I hear it quite frequently. I have to have this routine because I am a "pile person", as my wife calls it. I know where all my piles of stuff are, what is in them, and where to find them. My wife files everything. I pile it up. I guarantee I can find things faster than she can. (She knows it, and it infuriates her). Our house is not a mess, to be sure. My wife is a neat freak. It took us a little while to get a grip on our two different philosophies. All I have to do is keep my stuff away from her and out of her sight. She, in turn, does not dispose of anything in a pile. Instead, she will put it on my table in the garage, where I take the hint and minimize it. Please don't think my areas are overrun with piles of stuff. Its all neat and organized.
