My BOB

The lower pocket holds the stock nicely, and the retaining strap above it holds the rifle close to the pack. I have it jam packed and it's comfortable to wear.

I don't think that Maxpedition would fit an M4 :)

I recommend more conventional-looking bags. The innocuous, non-military looking ones you can find in luggage stores (but don't swing the pendulum over to "Hello, Kitty" ok?) . Ogio makes some nice ones that have lasted me ages. There's a good guide here (http://www.survivaltopics.com/survival/15-essentials/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) on essentials you would need (plus defensive gear). Make sure it all packs nicely _and_ make sure that you can haul it 5 miles over hilly terrain (no need to find the highest mountains or roughest roads). Sadly, I can't do this with mine (I'm overweight), but I've realized that I need to get back to my old self (or close enough to meet the objective I've stated above). On the brighter side, I've lost 10 genuine pounds in less than two weeks, so I'm on my way.

Getting this back on topic...there's lots of ways to make a bug out bag, but make sure you emphasize safety and survival, rather than paying too much attention to defensive gear. Besides, things that go "bang" only attract attention

Along these lines-- a non-descript bag is, IMO, a good plan. I would think that a millitary style bag, brimming with stuff would be an eyecatcher.

When I was living in an apt , I was concerned about folks seeing me carry a long gun bag back and forth.
A friend came into the range I was at one evening. He was carrying his carbine in a Nike baseball bat bag over his shoulder--black bag, zipper all the way down one side, and a Nike logo One would have never known it was a firearm.

That's my plan if I need to head out-- civillian camo for my stuff .

I use gear made by Tactical Tailor and Eagle Industries for work and it is top notch.

Kirafu also has a stellar following in the SF community for packs.

I've got a CLC bag that will work nicely as a BOB. 24" mossy oak pattern, it's called "the weekender".
