Where has the time gone?

Post by Liberty »

It's been 4 years since I last officially pulled up a seat and stepped into the waiting room. A couple of weeks ago I recieved a polite notice from the DPS requesting me to please visit their website and sign up for the my CHL renewal, I must confess I hadn't in the past paid a whole of attention to the renewal process.
For a couple of weeks I half heartedly tried to get my DD-214 so that I can save a few few bucks. I never got the DD214 but I pressed forward anyway, and called up the site.

In the past there was no benefit to to doing an application on line, but there didn't seem to be any choice,
The Application only took about 10- minutes to fill out online, real easy. After finnishing I was presented with the materials I need to mail back to DPS.
  • CHECK List
  • CHL 100
Thats It!

I printed up the Checklist which has a big old Barcode on the top, that must help process the application.
There are no Pictures or Fingerprints involved! No Affidaits either.

Charles had suggested several months ago that that we can expect some streamlining of the application process, but I didn't expect the turbo chargers. Wow, filling that out was a a whole lot easier.

I went down to the range to burn some powder and decide which weapon I will qualify with. I had a great time and put about 150 rounds down range.
As I checked out Tom Estap came in with a full class I asked him about a renewal and he told me about his Sunday Class, I wasn't expecting to be able to get into a class until next week.. So kewl!

4 years ago I started this process and logged on to Texas CHL forum. My 10 hour class with Tom was just the beginning of a continual education. The opportunity to learn on this forum combined Charles' Deadly force Seminars and, CHL Forum days are a big part of this. I am a lot better informed and trained than I was before I started this Journey.

Other things have changed, We have the MPA, and the Castle Doctrine are now the law of the land with very little ambiguity. We have gained more respect as a group. LEO isn't so quite as quick to disarm us, and reports of them getting alarmed or nervous when we inform them we have a gun have been pretty scarce. We even got Taco Cabana to take down their unfriendly signs.

My CHL has allowed me to confidently pack in 9 states. It has allowed me to protect my family and my self with confidence.

It's been a great 4 years,

Great post, Liberty.

BTW, did you try obtaining your DD-214 from the National Personal Records Center? I did and it took about two weeks after filling in a simple on-line form and no cost.

Took the class in Tezas City with Tom Estep on Sunday, I really enjoyed the course. I got to make a pretty ragged whole. but I had one pretty bad flier at the 3 point area, It was while shooting the 7 yard portion. Its all in the grip.

Mailed 2 pieces of paper today.. Hopefully I get mine soon, even though I'm covered until October.

Got my plastic today. although It came in somtime last week. I was away and unarmed all last week. :???: in Massachusetts, spent some time in New Hampshire, but I had no way to get my gun there. Trip made me appreciate my Texas CHL all the more.
I might carry concealed and discretely, but I carry proud and confident as go into my next 5 years
