Driving to MD Anderson in the morning

I found a few threads about this, but found some conflicting information as well so wanted to get a definitive answer.

My MIL is having surgery on Thursday morning and we'll be in and around the hospital this week. I would like to know if it is posted. My guess is yes, but I'd like to know for sure. I don't like the idea of leaving a firearm either in the hotel room or in my vehicle.

Also, if you are a praying person, she (and the surgeons) could sure use some prayer throughout the day Thursday. This is her second round with lymph cancer in her neck and there's a 90%+ chance they'll have to sever a facial nerve to remove the tumor, which will leave half of her face paralyzed. Please pray that they can remove it without having to do so. Her name is Margaret.

M.D. Anderson Hospital is actually owned by the University of Texas and is a teaching hospital. Don't carry there even without a 30.06 sign. I'm not saying that all teaching hospitals are off-limits, but this one is owned by a university.

First off, welcome to the forum.

Secondly IANAL, but if the hospital is truly associated with/owned by a University (as is MD Anderson and Baylor University Medical to name a couple), and they conduct classes that are accredited by the University and receive university funding, then I believe it would definitely be off-limits. Private hospitals with no educational institution ties may 'be a teaching hospital' (at least I HOPE the Dr's and Nurses are always learning), but would statutorily be required to post a 30.06 to be off-limits IMO.

I agree with most hospitals, but M.D. Anderson is owned by the University of Texas and it has UT faculty doctors teaching UT medical students, residents, fellows, etc. It does make a difference with this particular institution.

Hospitals that are not owned by universities are a different matter.

My wife had surgery at Methodist in the Texas Medical Center yesterday. I did not carry because I was not sure about the rule or their signage. Yesterday, I didn't even look for the sign because I was more pre-occupied by her operation. When I was there today, I did look for the sign. Each entrance off Fannin has a sign that says "state law prohibits carrying a handgun on these premises" in English and Spanish. 30.06 states that written communication must be IDENTICAL to the 30.06 language.

So, can I carry inside Methodist hospital? This is pretty much an academic question since I hope she will be released tomorrow.

I wanted to give everyone who was praying for my mother in law an update. God is very, very good! Our prayers were answered as her facial nerve didn't require cutting!!! They roughed it up a bit while removing tissue from the area (causing what should be some temporary paralysis) but were able to get the whole tumor without taking the nerve. The surgery ended up lasting 11 hours, which was about twice as long as anticipated, but the best surgeons MD Anderson has to offer took very good care of her. There was a huge sigh of releif when that was announced and I just wanted to send our thanks to everyone on this board who were pulling for us. Now to get her rehabilitated from the surgery so she can go back for six weeks of radiation treatment. Cancer stinks!

On a side note, I did not see any 30.06 postings anywhere, but we stayed at the Rotary House, which is connected to the hospital via a sky bridge and that was the only entrance I came through. Although the entrance wasn't posted I didn't take any chances. Thanks for all the input on this...it was very appreciated!

Thanking God for her successful surgery and praying for her full recovery. I know how hard cancer is on everyone in the family. God Bless you all in this time of worry for your loved one.
