New Mosin, where to take it in DFW

Don't know what to tell you about Dallas ranges. However, with a Mosin (or any of the WWI or II era full size rifles) I recommend shooting at 200+ yards.

Start at 100 yds to get comfortable with loading, sighting, squeezing the trigger, cycling the bolt. Also to make sure that your sights are correct. (Chances are they are perfect). Then move to 200 yards.

At 200 yards, the front sight will cover the target. There is a saying 'you don't have to see it, you just have to know where it is'. (It will help, however, if you shoot at larger paper targets). Regardless you'll be surprised how effective the Mosin is at 200+ yards. The biggest problem with a Mosin is that their triggers are a little squishy. But you can get used to your rifle's trigger by practicing with it.

The Mosin is great choice because all of the other old rifles use much more expensive ammo and the Mosin performs at or near the level as the others.

Haltom City Gun Club has a 200 yard bench, and you can use iron sights on it, but you have to either be a member, or the guest of a member to shoot there. I zeroed the irons on my M1A at 200 yards there. And you're not lying about the front size covering the target. In my case, the target was a 10"x10" steel plate. My M1A has a National Match front sight post, which is thinner than on the standard rifle, and it still obscured the target, with the sight post appearing to have exactly the same width as that 10" plate. But once I figured that out, I was able to absolutely flog that plate, nearly tearing it off the chain. Man I would hate to be shot with a .30 caliber rifle round. They are devastating.

Shooting full size (M1As, Garands, etc.) at 200+ yds is probably my favorite type of shooting.

If you like cigars (and the range allows them), bring two or three lawn chairs and shoot at a relaxed pace whike puffing away. (It is best to do this when the weather is not too hot). Just take your time and relax!

Learning to shoot at a front site covered target is part of the fun.

Is that because Miata drivers aren't willing to attempt a PIT maneuver in the event of an in-car self defense situation?

Hah, at 2100lbs I think if I tried a PIT maneuver in the miata I doubt the target car would even notice. But i'd probably crack my bumper and get tire marks all over the side of the car.

I think your best defence in a miata is a 90 degree turn at 40mph, that we can do very well.
