Ah, spent two lovely tours there back in the early '60's. Place has changed to a very modern country since then. I believe you will enjoy the tour immensely, other than being away from family if it's unaccompanied. All tours in my day were unaccompanied. Good luck, and stay safe.

Much appreciated. I am looking forward to it. It just another experience that will help my career. Yes, its unaccompanied. I did not want them to go over there with everything that is goin on. I know that the Koreas get their panties all twisted up every few months over something but I do not remember the last time that one Korea attacked another's military as the North did to the South. So, just to be a bit safer they are staying here. Plus, the wife has a good job and the kids are comfortable in their school.

Probably a smart move leaving the family at home. As for the "sabre rattling" by N. Korea, I was there during the current nut job's father's day (Kim Il Sung), and nothing has changed. N. Korea has been threatening invasion for one reason or another since the cease fire in '53. Of course, back then nuclear weapons were not on the table. As I said, Korea was nothing like it is now, back when i was there. it was a dirt poor country ravaged by war, and even the cities were terrible.

I do have a suggestion though. When was on my first tour, I learned the language (reading and writing) to some degree. My second tour, i got pretty good at it, but that was 45 years ago. The alphabet is very easy to learn in a day. Then you start reading signs in towns or villages, and the newspaper, and pretty soon you can converse with the locals. Nothing, and I mean nothing, will place you in higher regard with the Korean people than to try to speak in their native tongue. You will be welcome everywhere, even in uniform. We weren't allowed civvies back then, so we had no choice. Of course, maybe the military has already sent you to language school, and if so, never mind ;-)
