Magpul AFG Grip vs Vertical Grips

Post by SigOperator02 »

I was recently having a discussion with several of my military friends about Mapuls AFG Grip vs Tradition Grips. I love Magpul because when they design something, they always think about the Operator that is going to be using it and making fuctional for the user. There not just going to make something and slap them name on it. The AFG grips looks to be comfortable and I like that I can put it as further out on the rail to give me more stability. I think one of the only draw backs for me is that I can not see a good place to put a pressure switch for a rail mounted light.

The Tradition grips, i don't have a problem with. I just like thinking "Out Side The Box" every once an a while. Sometimes, I think that we as people get use to something one way and never try to learn better ways or try to for better stuff. With that being said, I do love the vertical grips with the tac lights built in like the SureFire M910-MW Vertical grip. It has a bright light and the pressure switches are built into the grip. It is rugged and can handle the extreme weather, dust and so on. If it is good from my buddies who use it on the front line, then it is good enough for me to consider trying.

What do y'all think about the grips and what are y'alls favorite grips and why?

Well, I have the AFG, and my son has a vertical grip on his otherwise nearly identical carbine. The AFG does take up considerably more room on the lower rail but it is a lot more comfortable... ...for me. Others who have tried it have said they would prefer to have it mounted perhaps further forward than mine, but for me, having it where it is works just fine. I like it closer in like that.

As to the pressure switch location for a tactical light.... Here's mine (without the magnifier in place):

I'm left handed, so I can press the pressure switch quite naturally by shifting my thumb a fraction of an inch. It's really easy and not a big deal at all. If I were right handed, I would simply mount the switch in the same position on the other side of the grip. The adhesive seems to stick just fine, despite the fact that there is not 100% contact between the adhesive backing of the switch, and the surfaces of the grip and rail.

I use an AFG also. The way I hold my carbine, I have my support hand wrapped around the handguard and my thumb right near the top rail. For this reason, I have my pressure pad mounted on the top rail. I have a Surefire Mini Scout with the SR07 switch. The setup works very well for me, but YMMV.

It is rare that I actually hold a VG with my forward hand wrapped around it. My front hand us usually wrapped around the handgaurds/rail and butts up against the VG - much like it would with the angled grip. TO ME - this is more comfortable than using the actual angled grip, but to each his own.

I have one in flat dark earth and i dont like it. Not because it doesn't work, i just want some storage space so i'm gonna get a larue fug. The magpul vfg is made to be used as far forward as possible.

This is what I like about gun shows. You get to try these things out before buying. It's a bummer to buy an accessory that doesn't work for you.

I never liked vertical grips. Just holding the forearm felt more comfortable than holding a vertical grip. However, without a grip, pulling the gun in (against your shoulder) relies mostly on your right hand (or the hand on the pistol grip). For me, Magpul has nailed it. The angle they use on the AFG is perfect. It fits the natural angle of my hand at the forearm and is angled enough that I can pull in with it. I don't have to work as hard holding the pistol grip. So hopefully, because the hand that pulls the trigger is more relaxed, and because I am more comfortable overall, I am a little better shot.
