Hunting grounds for Ferals?
I am looking for Farms where owners welcome hunters to shoot Feral hogs, should be within 45 min drive from North Dallas. I am not interested in the meat. If I do go someone can collect the animals.

If you are not interested in the meat, than why would you be interested in killing the hogs? There is no reason to kill something just for the sake of killing it.
Re: Hunting grounds for Ferals?
People kill rats, mice, snakes all the time.
Feral hogs do significant damage to land and fences, and just like the nuisances listed above, those whose property is damaged are often glad to have them eradicated.

Yes, I was reading Texas Wild life Mag and Farms can't keep up with control the explosive growth in numbers of destructive hogs. I want to contribute to their efforts.skub wrote:People kill rats, mice, snakes all the time.

Re: Hunting grounds for Ferals?
I don't know if the number is/was accurate at all, but I remember reading a couple of years ago that the population of feral hogs in Texas was on the order of 4.5 million, and that they accounted for damage to crops and property in the many millions of dollars. Whatever the correct number was then, it likely hasn't gotten any smaller since. THIS ARTICLE from 2006 says the number back then was 4-5 million nationally, and 1.5-2 million in Texas alone.
A mature sow can have 2 litters a year, of 4 to 8 piglets in a litter, so they are prolific breeders; and other than humans, they have no real predators to keep their population in check. And eradication efforts might be a failing proposition for a couple of reasons, it seems to me. One is that there just aren't enough hunters to hunt them, and not enough access for hunters to land where there are hogs. The other reason is that some land owners apparently actually release hogs on their property so as to have something to hunt, but they either don't kill them all, or the hogs escape onto neighboring properties.
So yeah, they're a pretty big problem.

Did you see the thread a while back about hog hunting from a helicopter? It sure looks like fun.
IIRC, one could make arrangements to donate that meat to a homeless shelter or other charity.

The Discovery channels occasionally show a 1 hour documentary about their spread, titled "Pig Bomb".
They have a few clips on their site.

Interesting fact stated at end of second clip. To stabilize the population, you have to kill 7 of every 10.

Yeah, Airborn Eradication is exciting, I guess I will be ground based and using my trusted Tikka T3:
Someone has to bring his truck, load the hogs and drive them straight to where it would processed. I have no issues with that.

Re: Hunting grounds for Ferals?
We don't try hunting feral hogs out here in west Texas, we try to exterminate them. Often they are not even good for the meat. It is an excellent way to practice hunting other game and most farmers will get mad if you don't hunt them. I have known of cases where farmers stopped people who are hunting on their neighbors land and literally ask the hunters to hunt on theirs as well. Although in the Wellman area there is one man who thinks the hogs belong to him and trespassing to protect them is acceptable to him, I have wondered how he would react if the farmers would bill him for damages.
How do you explain a dog named Sauer without first telling the story of a Puppy named Sig?
