Any "safe" less than $2000 is not really a safe but it will definitely keep smash-grabbers and kids out. If you can't bolt it down, its usefulness is even less.

I would suggest you do to what I do, put all but one pistol in the bank safe deposit box. For rifles and shotguns, take out their bolts and put them in the bank too and then chain them together. You can get special chain and locks from locksmith that are next to impossible to break without a grinder and drill.

Lastly, put away your hacksaws, drills and grinders if you have any.

How does the value of a safe automatically determine that it is not worthless, or lack of value determine that it is worthless?

An $1800 safe is nothing but add $200 bucks and it automatically becomes a safe place to store weapons. :???:

I have a safe that I paid about $1000 bucks for on sale. Bolted it to a concrete slab. Put most of my guns and factory ammo in it. If I had to guess, it probably weighs well over a ton sitting where it is. 36 long gun safe half full of long guns, a dozen or so handguns and about 8,000 rds of ammo. Add to that primers, cases, some software and various other gun related stuff. With the lifetime warranty against fire, flood or attempted safe cracking I will sick with my less than $2000 safe and feel confident in it.

Would someone be able to get into the safe eventually, probably. But with the alarm system they have about 3 to 5 minutes before the cops or I show up and that definately isn't enough time to get into the safe I have.

As far as the OP. I would suggest that you keep most of your guns someplace else like others have, and only have what you carry daily in your apartment in a quick access safe bolted to something that will be hard to move.
Just remember shot placement is much more important with what you shoot than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

Because of the cost of constructing a real safe. Most - almost every "safe" sold in Walmart, Sams, Acadamy etc. are residential security container (RSC). They are not UL listed and they can be broken into within 15 mins with simple hand tools such as crawl bars. I've done quite a bit of research on this topic. I am not saying they are useless but we need to understand their limitations.

In most cases, we want to set up layered defenses all the way from thorny bush in front of window, large dog roaming around, alarm system to bolted down heavy safe or RSC.

Well, I think that's exactly the point -- the reason why there's a variety of safes is because we have different security needs based on how much we want to protect something AND how functional it is to protect it. I have theft insurance on my firearms, but that doesn't mean I don't want to protect them from theft. I _do_ know that my system will stop a goon with a crowbar from running off with my stuff, but two guys with a plasma torch, an ability to work fast enough to not care about a security alarm, and a willingness to kill both my dogs -- they're gonna make out like, well, bandits.
I don't fear guns; I fear voters and politicians that fear guns.

Until you get your safe, you might want to consider this trick to at least slow down "amateur" thieves or roommates who just want to borrow your weapons: Get a higher quality bicycle lock (like the steel cables with combination locks) and run it through the frame of the gun and then attach it to something hard to move like a bed frame or even plumbing pipes.

Get creative. You could use several chain/cable locking devices and connect all of the bed frame pieces together. The point is to make it a big pain in the butt to move this stuff. Can you imagine trying to get out the door with a rifle chained to a complete bed frame?

Good luck!
