Does anyone compete with a carry gun

Post by Tregs »

Does anyone shoot real world pistol competitions with their lightweight, short barreled, single stack carry gun just for experience?

I attended a defensive pistol match this morning . As ususal, most were using full size, high capacity pistols. Glock 34, etc.

I haven't participated in a match yet. But I fully plan to use my carry gun - as soon as I get it. That's one reason I plan to pick up a 9mm instead of a .40 or .45 - so I can afford to shoot at the matches.

I do and since I now have a 3.8" compact and 3" Sub compact, the later showed more misses.

Our IDPA club runs a BUG (back up gun) match 2-3 times a year. We get the chance to use them against others using their carry guns.

i have only shot IDPA one time (so far, I will do it again)

I did it with my Taurus PT111 (compact 9mm). No reason to show defensive pistol if you are going to use a gun that you most likely will not shoot defensively.

I saw a lot of people there with full size 1911's and others like the Glock 17, and other full size pistols, but saw very few with compacts or sub-compacts.
the next one i shoot will be with my Springfield XD9 sub compact.

I competed in IDPA for a couple of years with a Sig P239 in 357 Sig. I eventually felt the need for a higher capacity magazine, and acquired a P226. Now I almost always carry the P226. It's a little heavier, but I've decided if I ever need a gun, I'll want plenty of gun. And with the right holster and belt, it's not that hard to conceal.

I've shot two IDPA matches (the 2nd being today) and I shoot the same gun that I carry on a regular basis, which is a Glock 19. I use the same holster that I normally carry with, and the only exception are the extra magazines. This time around I increased my accuracy by taking a little more time, but ended up in the same place... DEFINITELY need to practice MORE!

yes and no, I shoot a 5 " 1911 in most of my IDPA matches, and switch off on carrying a 4 inch and 5 inch 1911. my 4 inch has a allow frame so it is a little lighter to carry.

a lot of people carry full sized guns .

Yes. I shoot USPSA. Member number A64298, if you want to look me up and see how bad my scores are. :???:

I shoot Singlestack division with my 3" barrel, aluminum frame, Kimber. Most people in that division will shoot full-size, steel framed 1911s. I got into competition because I figured it was a good way to hone my skills with my carry gun. I have, so far, resisted the temptation to buy a gun just for competition. I do use 8-round mags rather than the flush fitting 7-rounders. (And I confirmed my suspicion that they'll break the ejector if you shove them in too far. )

Every gun I own is a carry gun except for my Buckmark and my Woodsman so, yes I shoot IDPA with my full size carry gun(s).

Just shot my very first IDPA event yesterday and used a Glock 19. I typically carry either a Glock 27 or Glock 23, but .40-cal offers no benefit as far as the classifications (shoots in same category as 9mm) so figured the 19 was the better choice. Same grip and size etc, just the smaller bullet and less recoil. Also have a G17 and I might start using it after seeing a lot of "full-size" guns out there - 17s, 34s, High Powers, big CZs, and of course all the 1911s.
