Sitting past 3:00

Post by terryg »

So for those who like to carry past 3:00 (for righties) - say around 4 or 4:30 or so (or between 6:30 and 9:00 for southpaws):

Do you adjust your carry when sitting in the car? Do you pull it around to 3:00 or so? And if so, how? After you get in in the car? If answering, please let me know if you are IWB, OWB, which holster, etc.

Thanks in advance,

t

Right handed, IWB, 9 o'clock, cheapy holster, Beretta 92G. Still fairly reachable when driving. I tried 3 o'clockish, but it kept getting in the way of stuff. Either way, the shirt has to be moved out of the way, and there is the added concern of sweeping the muzzle across innocents when drawing. Practice, practice, practice with several methods, and then continue to practice some more with the one you choose.

Look into alternatives for carry in the car that don't require a holster. Some good recommendations found throughout the forums here. I just keep mine on, because if I am in my car, it is running, and I am not going to sit there.

That's why I love my paddle holster. I usually carry about 4 o'clock. After closing the door, but before fastening my seat belt I will move closer to 3. And after removing my seat belt I'll move back to 4 before opening the door to exit. IWB is usually closer to 3, so does not requiring repositioning in these situations.

I had started around 4, but its 3:30 pretty much all the time. You can use a folder up towel on the seatback to redistribute the pressure more evenly when in the car.

Ooh, great question!

I'm a lefty and carry about 9:30 iwb in a crossbreed holster.

I wonder how you keep the gun from poking into your seat and eventually
ruining it. It isn't a scratch (since it is under my shirt) but a "depression"
from where I am sitting back against the seat...

When I got my CHL in the nineties, I was a little thinner. 4:00-4:30 worked for me. Sitting in the car was a little uncomfortable, but not too bad.
Recently, I spent most of a year driving 45 minutes each way back and forth to work. And I'm a little thicker than I once was. I was carrying daily and found that I kept moving the holster forward until I settled at about 3:00-3:30. I think it was a combination of my thicker waist and the driving. I think I've seen the trend here too. Seems to me that thinner guys tend to conceal better with it further back. Heavier guys seem to prefer it closer to 3:00. YMMV.

Unless the vehicle is disabled or somehow completely blocked in, I believe in driving rather than shooting. Not being there when the fight happens is the best outcome. Failing that, which do you think will do more damage, a 230 grain bullet or a 2000 pound bullet?

I have an IWB (Minotaur) and all of two weeks worth of experience to take what I'm telling you accordingly. I have my Sig canted and about 4:30. Maybe I've been lucky but neither our Saturn Vue nor the Ford Econoline van seats bother me with it in that position. So, no, I don't move it. We take long motor home trips but I haven't had a chance to try it in that seat (it's a Flexsteel) I'll probably put it in a fanny pack on those trips anyway and only use the holster when we are parted at a destination.

I have driven around town and been in and out of the vehicles a lot. I have to be careful in the van because the seat makes my shirt ride up on the way out. Other than that, 4:30 seems to work just fine.

Edit: just looked at another post. I'm thicker than I was and could stand to loose 20lbs.

Yeah, when I was carrying at 4:30ish, I was 5'7" and about 160-165lbs. When I moved it up to 3:30 or further forward, I was still 5'7" and 190-200.
I think how your'e built, as well as the way the gun/holster fits, not to mention the shape of the car seats, will all have an impact on what's comfortable for you.

I'm 6' 250 lbs. I can drive with my Sig P239 in a Crossbreed Supertuck or QuickClip at 4:30 with no problem.

Unfortunately, if I get it much past 3:30 I start getting numbness in my leg while standing or walking. It seems to go pretty much from the top of my leg to the knee, on the front outside of my thigh.

Before anyone asks, yes I also wear a Crossbreed gun belt.

Does anyone else have this problem?

I carry at 4 with about a 30 degree cant with my Pro CDP or USPc IWB, no issues while driving. However, when I carry OWB without the cant, the CDP binds a little in that same possition because the barrel isn't tucked in my pants.

It's 5 o'clock somewhere.

I carry just behind my hip (4:00ish) and don't make any adjustments for driving. G30 in a CTAC the vast majority of the time for me.

Is this a comfort or accessibility question?

Accessibility can easily be answered with a second gun.

Comfort. I have tried both IWB and OWB. But it has more to do with my 'sporty' seats than anything else probably. They kinda wrap around just a bit on both sides. I can sit in any chair in my house just fine. But in the car it just digs in too much.
