Took the course...

Post by randomoutburst »

I turned 21 two weeks ago, and took my CHL class this past Saturday. The instructor asked the rangemaster (who knows me) if I was even old enough to be in the class. :smilelol5: Just barely!

I enjoyed the class, and the instructor made it interesting for us. He brought up possibilities, scenarios, and thoughts that I hadn't considered. I feel like I took a lot away from his class and even bought the book he recommended to us: Verbal Judo by George Thompson.

I didn't know whether I should be proud or scared about the shooting qualification, though. Our class was split into two groups. I don't know how the other group fared, but I was the only girl in my group and I know I shot as good as one guy (at minimum...I may have shot better) and better than everyone else.

I was in the last lane, and the instructor told us to leave our targets when we left to go fill out paperwork. I got to walk past every other lane on my way to the door, and some targets looked like swiss cheese. Shots all over the paper, as though that day was their first time to shoot a handgun. Mine was in a fairly good group, considering I don't normally use the gun I had. Since my gun has yet to arrive, I used my husband's Taurus PT92, and the double stack grip is too wide for my hands, making shooting a little more difficult. Still, I managed to keep all but two rounds in the "5" scoring area. The other two were just outside the line, into the "4" scoring area.

Hubby said, "Congratulations...but I shot better on my qualification!" And so he did. Goofball.

Anyway, I'm sending off my packet tomorrow and I'll be lounging around in the waiting room for a while!

Congrats! :thewave
It sounds like you had a good instructor for your class.
It's amazing what you can take away from a CHL class. I was blown away with the information that I received from my instructor. The different scenarios that were thrown out during the class really changed my way of thinking about the law and how it pertains to the average citizen. It was a real eye opener for me.
I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the class and did well with the shooting portion of the test. If nothing else, it should be a confidence builder to know that you shot in the top of your class.
Congrats again on a job well done! :thumbs2: :clapping:

There were two other women in the class: one middle-aged, one elderly. I was the youngest person in the class for sure, so I felt out of place until we did the shooting qualification. After that, I spoke up in class a bit and didn't keep quiet like I had at the beginning. It was definitely a confidence booster in my ability, but I couldn't help thinking that I wouldn't want to be next to a BG if one of those guys were firing...because I'd probably be hit!

I was very pleased with my instructor. My husband took his course last year and came home with stories to share that were told in class, and he relayed information that I didn't previously know. He loved the class and thought he had a good instructor, so I chose to take it at the same place with the same instructor. Worked out well!
