My son's first ever pistol match...

This morning at Dallas Pistol Club, a Personal Protection match was held. My son entered it, and I helped by shooting the video and making smart-aleck comments. We don't know the score yet, but he did pretty well for a first timer, and I'm very proud of him.

Scenario: you're in the front row of first class. Terrorists have hijacked the plane. Armed pilot has exited cockpit with gun and is taken out by terrorists. You pickup his gun and engage terrorists - without wounding passengers. First target on the right is a terrorist hiding behind a passenger shield with just top of head and left shoulder visible to you. Double tap required on that target.

Scenario: Sometimes you have to shoot moving targets from crazy angles. This round used the "Star of Texas," a spinning wheel with steel plates mounted on it. The difficulty is that you can only shoot at the exposed plates as they swing through the bottom of the arc. Bullet impacts knock the plate off the wheel, so speed of rotation is variable according to how many plates are left, and where they are on the wheel.

Scenario: Engaging armed terrorists from cover. Shoot 4 hits to center of mass on each of 4 targets. Limited to 16 total rounds fired, so you must hit with each round. Always shoot outside target first. First target shot from left side of cover. Second target shot from right side of cover. Move to second cover. Engage third target from right side of cover. Shoot fourth target from left side of cover.

Scenario: Engaging multiple armed targets from behind cover. 5 points per target to complete. 1 hit in bullseye = 5 points, but the bullseye is pretty small, so double tapping is recommended since hits outside the bullseye are 4 points each. Again, shoot outside targets first, inside targets next. Move from left cover to right cover after shooting first 2 targets.

My son made a mistake on this round and was penalized for not shooting final target from the left side of the second cover.

Scenario: Spray and Pray. 5 points per target. Very small bullseye = 5 points. Double tap all targets ensures 5 point score. Shoot targets from left to right. Targets are in crazy positions.

My son made a mistake on this round by accidentally charging his pistol with his "barney mag" during a reload. The "barney mag" wasn't topped off, so he had to reload a second time when the barney mag ran dry. Barney mag fell apart when it hit the ground, the follower and spring popping right out. That's why he's called "Barney."

All in all, considering that this was his first ever competition, my son did OK, and like I said, I'm very proud of him.

Tyler did great and I'm sure beat at least a handful of shooters. He was safe and looked relaxed, not anxious or nervous. I'd say most first timers wish they could do as well.

Now, if he'll spend some time at the reloading bench and make some nice soft shooting ammo instead of shooting factory 45...

Well Tom, you wouldn't have heard any of that from Tyler or me. That was the only time either of us has ever shot the Texas Star, so we didn't know any better.

There were two Texas Stars set up at PSC last year for the forum day - basically a duel between two shooters to see who could clear their star first. It's a humbling experience, but tons of fun!

Can you give up on the Texas star stage? I missed today's match due to our Holidays. I know both RO and his time keeper shown above. Gary is great shooter.

TX star bottom only is a challenge. HUGE difference in shooting bottom vs top.

Looks fun, and DPC is close. i had to make a choice between range shooting and this yesterday. I'm kind of regretting going to the range.
