Colt AR worth the price?
Colt AR worth the price?
I went into my local shop looking to buy my first carbine. I've been looking at pretty much plan-jane Bushys running ~$900. My local gun guy is trying to sell me a basic Colt with a similar configuration for ~$1300 and saying it's worth the extra $$ cause it's a Colt and will be more rugged and retain it's value better.
What sayeth the interwebs? Is a Colt worth $400 more than a Bushy?

Check out this chart and see for yourself:

(Chart is near the bottom)
IMO, Yes, but not simply because 'It's a Colt' but rather for all the items shown in the chart.
Personally, I think the BCM is the best deal. It's cheaper than the Colt, but has all the same benefits, as well as a lifetime warranty, compared to Colt's 1 year.

IANAL, YMMV, ITEOTWAWKI and all that.

One word: Yes.
Personally I think KAC is the best of the best, but there is a group in close 2nd place in no particular order: Colt, Noveske, LMT, BCM, Daniel Defense.
ETA: I guess my avatar sort of gives me away for a KAC fan.

What do you intend on doing with it? I seem to think not worth the extra $. I have had too many other brand Ar's that were way to good to spend the extra bucks for the COLT name. It is a great quality rifle, but if you are just plinkin with it then why not get the cheaper and save some money for ammo. That is more than a case of ammo in savings going with a Bushmaster, CMMG, or RockRiver. Noveske is at the top of price along with LWRC or LaRue. They are all fantastic rifles but at what cost. And I have first hand experience with LaRue products...Full rifles, mounts, and rails.newTexan wrote:I went into my local shop looking to buy my first carbine. I agree, any AR-15 will work fine if you're just punching paper occasionally.RECIT wrote: Noveske is at the top of price along with LWRC or LaRue. They are all fantastic rifles but at what cost. And I have first hand experience with LaRue products...Full rifles, mounts, and rails.
Personally, I own a LMT Flat Top with all LaRue Optics mounting hardware, Rails & Buis, Aimpoint Optics and magnifier, and Magpul grips and stock. I built my rifle as a TEOTWAWKI/Zombie Apocalypse rifle, but It comes at a premium. I don't know off the top of my head how much I've put into it, but $3,000 would probably be a conservative estimate.

Yup, LMT is top notch too. Sorry I left them out. But yeah, you can spend $800 or 3K as stated to get a rig set up the way YOU want it. I have rifles ranging from $600 used to 3K spent on a LaRue with Trijicon optics and LaRue mount.

Re: Colt AR worth the price?
To the question of what I'd be doing with it, my personal needs are somewhat modest. I will be doing mostly plinking/home-defense style activities. I may someday get into the sporting aspects like 3-gun, but that's not on a short horizon. It's mostly for just having fun. On the other hand, reliability matters a lot to me. I want something that will be dependable.

LMT piston MRP here. Great gun from a great company.dicion wrote:Personally, I own a LMT Flat Top with all LaRue Optics mounting hardware, Rails & Buis, Aimpoint Optics and magnifier, and Magpul grips and stock. Re: Colt AR worth the price?
Short answer: No.
The Colt ARs I've seen do seem to work well . . . but no better than any of a number of other rifles. But Colt has messed with many of their AR models by using non-standard pins and installing a block in the lower which makes installing an aftermarket trigger problematic.
They also omitted that all-important bayonet lug on many models.
You can - for a price - get one of their "LE" - Law Enforcement - marked rifles that are more standard, but these are "gray market" and usually have an inflated price tag.
My experience with another Colt firearm and Colt's so-called "warranty" made me swear off EVER buying another Colt product. (Based on my experience, Colt approaches their warranty by keeping the customer's gun for a while, and returning it untouched & unrepaired. They then repeat until customer gives up in disgust.

Buy a cheaper AR like a stag around $750 and put $550 into the optics.

I'm not sure what part of the state you're in but if you are in Houston Carter's Country has a Bushmaster Tactical AR-15 for $899.00 with 12 month no interest financing.

Colt Match Target Competition HBAR - AR 15, 16" barrel for sale with less than 60 rounds fired through it. It comes with two 30 round magazines, one 20 and one 5 round. It also comes with a Barska 4X20 scope mounted on the carry handle (allows use of iron sights and scope) chambered for 5.56 NATO so you can fire either military 5.56 or .223 remington. This model has a removeable carry handle which allows the use of a scope or other accessories on when the carry handle is removed. The barrel was threaded and a flash hider installed by a gun smith. I still have the original box also. I would like FTF in Friendswood, I do not want to ship at this time but may consider if I do not find local buyers. This is another of my personal guns I would not be selling but I need money to purchase some inventory. I will also include about 50 rounds of ammo.

If someone local buys this I will throw in two free tranfers for the buyer for future purchases.
