I said thanks, and mentioned that the silhouette perfectly matched my Model 60. He said, "You have one of those? I do too!"
We got to talking about revolvers, and he asked if I had anything else. I told him about my new STI 1911, and he said, "I'm about to get a Springfield XD in .45 as my carry." After he said "carry" he trailed off and looked a bit sheepish, as though he didn't know how I'd react or if I knew what he was talking about.
"My 1911 is going to be my carry. Have you already applied for your license?"
Man, his face lit up. He hasn't taken the course yet, but is doing so next month. I asked where, and he said...TARGETMASTER. As you may know if you read my STI/TargetMaster fiasco, I am NOT happy with them.
I didn't tell him that, but I did mention that Red River Firearms is a lot closer, has a wonderful CHL instructor, and offers a student discount. Not only that, but for the student price of $108, you get a one-day class, fingerprints, photos, and a free year of level 1 membership that cuts your range fee by almost 40%.
I hope he gets his CHL, even if he does go to TargetMaster. I was so excited to see that someone else at my liberal-arts college is forward-minded about self-defense and firearms! Next semester I'm holding our Empty Holster Protest again, so I'll definitely be networking with him to try and get more participants.
Man, am I excited to find another CHLer at my college! I thought I had sniffed them all out...but I didn't factor in that we get a fair number of transfer students like him; guess I need to step it up and keep searching for 'em!
