Reminds me of what somebody once told me: "If Glock made a rifle, it would be called the AK-47"RECIT wrote:I have both and shoot both. I like the modularity or the AR platform, but appreciate the reliability of the AK. I would say the AK is my go to bad scenario rifle. It will run with the dirtiest of ammo, in the most adverse conditions I can imagine, and I think in a worst case scenario I could keep it functional longer with much less maintenance and fewer cleaning materials. The ammo may not be plentiful here, but its cheap enough to stock up on.
Who owns what? AK vs AR

I don't fear guns; I fear voters and politicians that fear guns.

I'm with you. AK only for me. .223 is too small.
Re: Who owns what? AK vs AR
I have 2 ARs and 1 AK and there is only one thing that I like better about the ARs. Material quality. I'm not sold on eastern bloc steel.
Re: Who owns what? AK vs AR
I have 2 Ar's, FN SCAR, and AK Variants (PSL, Polish Underfolder, RPK). If ever truly needed I would go with the SCAR and carry the underfolder as a BUG for ammo availability.

Re: Who owns what? AK vs AR
I own both. I prefer the AR at the range. But I'd grab the AK in a a problem arises situation.
For whatever reason (probably cost) I treat my AR like a baby. I cringe when I see it dirty and would probably shriek if I ever scratched it. The AK, was born ugly and crude so I treat it like a workhorse.

One AR and two vz58's for me !
Seriously, I can't believe I don't see vz's mentioned more often - excellent little rifles.

Yep, the one that looks like an AK but internally isn't anything like it. Supposed to be a nice rifle though.

Aren't the vz58's more expensive?... What's the price range for them? If I remember they look like the AK, but internally they are more like the German WWII STG44... or am I not remembering correctly?74novaman wrote:Yep, the one that looks like an AK but internally isn't anything like it. It's been sometime ago since I heard of them...

Re: Who owns what? AK vs AR
Well more expensive if you compare them against the cheapest AK. But if you compare like-for-like (eg a nicely built, milled receiver AK) they are quite competitive. I think TGI are selling their last D-techniks for $690. And correct - the outline, from a distance does resemble an AK but they are completely different inside. Lighter and slimmer than an AK (even a stamped receiver variant), sensibly located safety, bolt-hold-open, lightweight aluminium magazines (for $13 a pop), chromed barrel, and really beautifully put together and finished.Aren't the vz58's more expensive?... Century also make a vz2008 which I hear some negative things about, but are a couple of hundred dollars cheaper.

Re: Who owns what? AK vs AR
I am an AR fan for a number of (mostly subjective) reasons. I use this as a home defense weapon coupled with a 7.5" barrel, AAC 2000, BMFF, and EOTech 552. I don't have to worry about killing all of my neighbors and muzzle climb is near zero. I prefer this over my 870 or 1911 on case by case. If I can clear some bad guys house, floor plan unknown, badguys unknown, with an M4 then doing my own house is cake. And yes....I practice doing this in pitch black, usually while the wife is on girls night out, lol.
I have never had an issue with an AR variant, even my gov. issued M4 ran like a top no matter what the hell I did to it. It even survived a fall off of a roof with me attached. My currect rig is by far of higher quality than my cookie cutter colt. Reliability? Check.
I have a ton of experience shooting both platforms however I am more comfortable with the AR ergonomics. Comfort=precision. Check.
Ammo used to be free.....but it's not hard to find good ammo at reasonable prices....that can be reloaded. Check.
Both are fun, effective weapons I just PREFER to use the tool I am most comfortable with. To each their own, I pity the man who chooses his sword by the popular vote.
I forgot to add one last thing: A suppressed SBR M4 just looks wayyy cooler (if we are talking tacticool, some people are in to that sort of thing) than an AK.... I just keep thinking of all those poor guys over yonder duct taping broomsticks and mag lights to their AK's......it's a personal thing.

Re: Who owns what? AK vs AR
I thought about getting a VZ58, but the use of different magazines made me shy away. I have a boat load of AK mags and I would rather get another one.
I used to think AR's were less reliable until I got hold of some better quality AR's. I think in the conditions most of us are likely to face, they are equally reliable.
I like the AK soft point ammo for self defense, but there is a lot of 223 self defense ammo out there. That said, my AK is my current ready rifle though the others aren't far behind.
