MO: Police officer accidentally kills colleague

In St. Joseph, Missouri, on September 15, two police officers were supposed to be practicing tactics with Simunitions. One officer accidentally shot another with a live round from a duty piece. The victim died.

Safety rules broken. Never point your weapon on something unless you are about to destroy it.

It would defeat the purpose of Simunitions if you didn't fire the marking cartridges at your training partners. The problem is the shooter was using a real firearm and violated all the sims training rules.

Now, sadly, the shooter and the primary instructor will have to live with the fact that their carelessness killed one of their comrades. Not an easy thing to do...

1: He did exactly what you said, He intended to shoot his partner.. That was the task at hand.

2: If your a civilian, that little mantra is very nice to remember, very true. However, Military and LEO's often with great care and purpose point very real weapons at there fellow LEO's or military members often dry firing them or shooting simunitions. You just have to take deliberate actions to mitigate the risks.

How about a gun with a "safety orange" slide, or any coloring/marking that make it easy to identify as a "safe" training weapon. Orange paint is cheap... Human life is priceless.

How about some basic range discipline, and then enforce it.
I was not there, but obviously there was an issue with the range procedures, or following the established procedures. One man is dead, another has to try and live with killing him,,,, often,,,, that does not work out so well.

Most SIMUNITIONS conversion kits http://www.simunition.com/conversion_ki ... ols_en.php have a blue slide component for pistols, but not all use a different slide, some just a barrel, or barrel and mag.. or..or or.. One week you might be using SIMUNITIONS, then next time snap caps, then next CQT rounds.. They key to all of that is discipline to follow the strict range procedures.


This was a tragic mistake..... from what has been written that i have read.....a pink, purple or safety orange slide was not going to change the outcome.

We have trained thousands of people over the years with SIMUNITIONS , from experienced soldiers to brand new ones. It's not their previous training that kept them safe in this high risk training environment it was the risk mitigation put in place.
