Star Spangled Banner - 4th verse

Post by TDDude »

I ran across this on Face Book and I never knew that our national anthem had more than one verse and there are actually four verses. It's right there in Wikipedia.

Hearing it sung has a much greater effect than simply reading it so here you go. The fourth verse.

I tried imbedding it but it didn't work.

My eyes are filled with tears right now, after hearing that sung.

It is sad that the singing of the National Anthem has been shortened, and reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance seldom heard anymore.

A one Air Force unit I was a member of, one of our officers often sang the National Anthem at various events. He always sang one of the other verses (i.e. not the first one). :patriot:

:iagree: :patriot: I started getting misty eyed while hearing this as well.
However, you can see why you won't hear that verse sung in public... It's too politically incorrect with the mention of God, and conquering our foes :banghead: . It's amazing that most US citizens don't know that there are other verses to the anthem. However, it does seem like a great way to start a debate about censorship and government agenda.

I went to grade school in Texas sometime toward the middle part of the last century and at about the fourth grade we were forced (forced, mind you!!) to learn all the verses of the Star Spangled Banner. When you remember the circumstances under which it was written, it is one powerful piece of writing.

If you are interested in aggressive national anthems, consider the one from our amigos, the French. "La Marseillaise" was originally titled the "War Song for the Army of the Rhine." The Pledge is made every day at every public school. Intact. Along with the Texas pledge. And some students actually know the words.

Ironically, attention to the pledge seems to die out as children become adults. Guess you can't blame the public school system on this one!

Both of my kids (5th and 2nd grade) know the Pledge and the "Honor the Texas Flag" by heart. They say these every day at school, along with the school's motto. This is a public school in Katy ISD.

I think it is a bit early to say that, at least regarding the Texas Pledge. It wasn't made a requirement until 2003. I admit that I had never heard of it until I read this thread.
