Round Rock area state house race is close

As the name indicates, this is the place for gun-related political discussions. It is not open to other political topics.

Round Rock area state house race is close

Post by A-R »

Article in today's Austin Statesman points out the race for House District 52 is very close. This district includes most of Round Rock, plus much of the Hutto and Taylor areas and parts of southern Georgetown. This area - like much the rest of Williamson County - had been solidly Republican for decades. But enroachment of "Austin types" north into this area of southern WilCo has changed things. The current Democrat state rep, Diane Maldonado, won the seat in a surprise in 2008, no doubt riding on Obama's coat tails a bit. This time, she has a strong Republican challenger in Larry Gonzales.

Some important points from the article for those of us on this website to consider:
[c] 2010 Austin American Statesman wrote:Maldonado and Gonzales have demonstrated clear differences on a number of issues, including:

• Guns on campus: Gonzales supports legislation allowing students and employees with concealed handgun licenses to carry pistols into university classrooms. "A weapon in the hands of a law-abiding citizen has proven to be not a safety issue," Gonzales said.

Maldonado, who said she took a concealed handgun class to get the perspective of gun owners in her district, said she does not support allowing guns in campus buildings. "It's important that we put that responsibility on our law enforcement," she said.

• Voter identification: Maldonado briefly participated in Democratic efforts late in the 2009 legislative session to slow the movement of bills to a crawl. They were trying to stop a proposal to require voters to show photo identification or two nonphoto forms of ID at the polls
To see if you live in this district, take a look at the district boundary map http://www.texastribune.org/directory/d ... -house/52/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (I'm just north of this area in state district 20).

Sure would be nice to send Maldonado packing and put a gun-friendly rep in this seat again.

Man o man! I'm only about 5 miles from being in this district. I would love to vote in a close race like this. I saw Gonzales at the Georgetown Tea Party rally. He's what round rock needs. They're right. Too many Austinites spilling over into Wilco.

"It's important that we put that responsibility on our law enforcement," she said.
She just doesn't get it, does she?
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... (Jefferson quoting Beccaria)

... tyrants accomplish their purposes ...by disarming the people, and making it an offense to keep arms. - Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story, 1840

Here a video clip of Maldonado delivering the lines quoted above:
