Re: How to tell burglars where your guns are
A devious person would download free software to edit the exif data and change it to something interesting like the middle of a swamp, or the address of an antigun politician, or a rig in the gulf.
This will only hurt a little. What comes next, more so.

Re: How to accidentally tell burglars where your guns are
Has this actually happened to someone or is it just a possibility.
It occurs to me that if someone is smart enough to determine the location, they are probably smart enough to have a job and buy their own guns. Also, other than determining the house the guns are in, how the hell does the GPS help? Do people take pictures of their guns exactly where they store them? Hell, in Texas, you could break into any given home and probably be better than 50/50 of finding a gun. IMO, the could also find the same information by tracing you username and IP address to determine where you live.
Maybe I need to just take pictures of my guns at the range.

All they have to do is look for the NRA stickers, Gadsen flags, etc on your house and car to figure it out...

LOL true, I actually saw a news report last night about teens being stalked due to taking photos and tweeting, just applied it to guns for the forum.TxSheepdog wrote:All they have to do is look for the NRA stickers, Gadsen flags, etc on your house and car to figure it out...
People are actuallly stalked by twitter and photos, the news feature was more focused on pedophiles stalking teens this way, but I adapted the info for guns for this forum, since some may not be aware of the possibility.MechAg94 wrote:Has this actually happened to someone or is it just a possibility.

But one doesn't have to be real smart to do it, many many 12 to 16 year olds can plug the GPS data from photos into online maps. Teens with too much time on their hands sometimes break into places.
The peskiest problems we had at MSN were a few teens with too much time on their hands, and the only two guys who actually penetrated security there that I'm aware of between 1996 and 2007, were two particular young boys. (One went to jail, the other signed an agreement that I can't discuss, in lieu of getting into major trouble.)
My IP address would say I live 30 miles from my house, actually two cities away, if anyone checked it.

Yep, this GPS tagging and the game foursquare make thieves jobs much easier. Oh yeah and Google buzz and Twitter don't help either.

I'd better remove the Bush/Chaney bumper sticker, too.All they have to do is look for the NRA stickers, Gadsen flags, etc on your house and car to figure it out...

I'm in stealth mode. No college affiliation on the car, no weapon references on the cars or house. Heck the only 'give away' I own is the "Got Ammo? ...i do" shirt that the wife bought me from academy... but she doesn't let me wear it outside the house when she's around.

Re: How to accidentally tell burglars where your guns are
Yup, it can be used on fishing forums too, if you want to know where the guy's secret fishin' hole is and he won;t tell youAndyC wrote:We went over this about 2 months back - pretty interesting stuff :)
for example (GPS coordinates were turned off for this example)
click this, then scroll down the page for more than basic info
http://regex.info/exif.cgi?dummy=on&url ... 10%26t%3D1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
GPS Latitude 0.000000 degrees N
GPS Longitude 0.000000 degrees E
GPS Position 0.000000 degrees N, 0.000000 degrees E
Now if I take a photo on my boat of where I caught the fish without turning the GPS "feature" off, you'd steal my honey-hole fishin' spot

My sister-in-law and I were talking, now she wants me to find Osama Bin Laden via internet photos of him
( I did tie up Microsoft lawyers (concerned with privacy issues) and System/network Admins (to explain technical stuff to the lawyers, who tried to explain it to the FBI) an entire day once when they tried to explain how I got info on a guy in Pakistan whose intentions weren't good after 911. The evil guy's plans were foiled, but after that Microsoft told me to just give info to the FBI directly and save the lawyers grief.
